Hi... I'm new to all this.... diagnosed May 2016.. b/g off the scale... I'm 53,went straight to insulin injections
.. and am now injecting 56 units twice a day.... b/g currently 17... but varies between 6 and 11 on average... with occasional dips to 4.7... I'm at a total loss.. every one I speak to outside of medical profession says I'm a type 1... please please can some one explain the difference....

Should have read 2017... time flies
 
Change doctors and get a review... you could be a T1 though that's usually (or at least is more common) a diagnosis for those younger than you

There are plenty of T2s on insulin but those numbers could also suggest otherwise. Only a qualified doctor could determine that, but they're wild swings.

What do you eat and what is your weight?
 
bg is still harmful its still not under control. you needto be seen by the consultant . your diet is very important if type 2
 
your on 112 units and its still that high. may be you need a new type.

That's nice. But the medical professionals are obviously treating you as a type 2 if you are on 2 shots of insulin a day. And being on a total daily dose of 112 units strongly suggests insulin resistance.

Type 1 is an autoimmune disease where the immune system kills off the insulin producing beta cells. If you suspect type 1 you can be tested for the antibodies associated with autoimmune type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 is a metabolic condition where cells become resistant to insulin.

What insulin are you on, is it a basal insulin only or is it a mixed insulin? Do be cautious about diet adjustments while on insulin.
 
i agree care needs to be taken but its possible you will need to watch you bg carefully as they start to drop you need to start cutting small amounts until it stabilizes and repeat until it get to a good level. metformin may help if you are type 2 or even 1 with a very high resistance.
 
@Multitude you may just not be on enough insulin to reduce your bgs. When are you seeing your diabetic team next? That's what insulin resistance looks like. Your team needs to see your readings and to advise.

Thank you all for your replies... I will go back to my doctors, and request to see a consultant...I only saw the consultant when admitted to hospital on initial diagnosis... I'm on a 30 percent soluble..70 percent isolate insulin... and 're diet... am very careful 're sugars and doctor did say on needed more protein.. I do really appreciate all your advice.. as feel a bit in he wilderness 're GP.. and diabetic nurse.

My team advise me on more protein too but if too low carb diet your protein will be converted to glucose so you must get a good balance for insulin.
Try and see consultants nurse. They are good. Consultants are only needed for med changes or additional tests to be authorised.
