Type of diabetes

My Auntie is 71 yrs old and has type 2 diabetes. She was recently sent to hospital as she weighs 6 stone. She has depression, poor eyesight, numb feet , memory problems. I am a type 1 diabetic and I have told her this could be due to high blood sugar levels. She says here bloods are in the 19s and she takes tablets for it. I have told her to see her GP but neither the GP or the hospital seem to want to help. Surely she should be put on insulin. Can anyone advise please

Was the Type 2 diagnosis recent? And has she lost weight recently without trying?
I'd be asking for a C-Peptide and GAD test for her to check that diagnosis... Can you represent her at the hospital? With BS levels in the high teens she must be feeling pretty ill so hardly surprising she's not up to the fight for decent care.

She was admitted to hospital for 2 weeks and they knew about her diabetes and the loss of feeling in her feet. She hasn't been eating which has added to the problem. I live 300 miles from her so attending GP/hospital with her isn't possible. If I can work out she is getting complications from high blood sugar levels why the hell can't the doctors.

Sometimes I do wonder what kind of training they get... Sorry can't be more help.

Thank you I have advised her to go to her GP and ask for a C- peptide and GAD test hopefully her GP can then get her the right treatment. I have had Type 1 diabetes for 15 yrs and I know for a fact I know more about it than some doctors. Thank you for your help and taking the time to reply
 
Most of us control our BG by managing our diet and cutting down drastically on the carbs. Your Aunt would have to want to do this.

My auntie went to her GP and told him about the complications she is having with her Type 2 diabetes. She has high blood sugar levels weighs 6 stone and has now no feeling in her feet . Her GP isn't interested and she is so afraid she'll lose her feet. As a Type 1 diabetic I know the consequences and i'm very worried. Why wont her GP help. People keep mentioning she should change her diet. Let me just say she is too ill to eat i'm at my wits end what can she do. Can anyone advise pleasa

Are her blood sugars still really high?
If so I think the best thing she can do is get herself admitted to hospital. A&E? not the nicest experience but if she has really high blood sugars then DKA might be a possibility? She might be able to call 111 and see if they will get her admitted (although I must admit my experience with them has been less than optimal). Apart from that I can't think of anything apart from trying another doctor?

She pent two weeks in hospital and they sent her home with no feeling in her feet. She's just going round in circles and no one seems to want to help. I'm furious but I live 300 miles away from her or I would be banging on the surgery door and taking her to A&E. why do doctors know nothing about diabetes it's ridiculous
 
What exactly did the doctor say was wrong with her, or what did he advise? He must have said something during the appointment. She can't go on like this, and although I'm biased (being 70) she is not an old woman at 71. Although it has never happened to me personally, I do sometimes think older people get brushed off.
 
Are there any organisations you could contact for advice? Age concern for example, even talk to the Samaritans.

At the end of the day, if she loses her feet, she will end up in residential care.

Could she move nearer to a relative? A change of doctor seems to be in order.
 
Can you get her an appointment with the Diabetes clinic attached to the hospital? The professionals there are often better than the doctors imho. But I agree with others - she needs a champion, and places like age concern local to her are where you might find someone.

What part of the country does she live in? Maybe a forum member nearby could help?
 
She has a family my uncle literally carried her into the doctors yesterday. because i'm Type 1 on insulin I don't really know much about Type 2 medications. She does take tablets for it but I was thinking maybe the GP should have put her a low dose of insulin. I would go with her but it's not possible
I mentioned asking for a GAD test but the doctor wouldn't do one. I do wonder at her GP and myself I would just see someone else but not sure if this GP was the one who a few weeks ago sent her directly to hospital. Any way thanks for all your help guys I will keep trying to get her some help just not sure how yet
