Type 2

I've read conflicting reports on jacket potatoes and pasta.??

So far it looks like all I can eat are vegetables brown rice and fruit. Don't know how I'm going to live on that

@CJ744 I know it is daunting. When I first discovered that I was diabetic, I felt like I was not going to be able to enjoy any of the foods that I enjoyed as a treat. However, then I discovered that there was a ton of new foods that I had previously thought off-limits that could now be a part of my new lifestyle...real mayo, tabs of butter, heavy cream. How indulgent!
As far as pasta and potatoes, I can't eat them at this time, but there are some people that can.

Here are some of the things I eat regularly:
Protein: All meats, fish (salmon, mackerel), cottage cheese (full fat), cheese, full fat yogurt. When you make a steak or pork chops, eat the fat. It's good for you!

Vegetables: cruciferous, salads, zucchini/summer squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, MUSHROOMS (I live for those)...anything that grows above ground and is non-starchy

Fruit: raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, apple (although, I usually only eat a half at a time) and AVOCADO (thank the heavens for that!!!)

Healthy oils/fats: coconut oil, coconut butter, real butter, olive oil, chia seed, flax seed, real mayonnaise

:grumpy: i eat veg but not much fruit ....according to my Diabetic Nurse I need so many carbs a day .....:banghead:

I can't eat a lot either, but I try to sneak in a 1/2 cup of berries or a few wedges of apple per day and it seems to work for me. Prior to my diagnosis, I ate fruit almost at every meal.

I read to replace white pasta for brown yet checked the labels and they both have same % of salt and sugar. .is that what I need to concentrate on now sugar and salt levels? What's the maximum % in food I should have

Do I need to eat weight watchers food now

Is soup okay?

Sorry for all the questions

Diet food tends to be low fat but high sugar. Don't waste your money on it. Eat normal food but try and avoid processed stuff if you can.

No, it is the carbohydrate count that you need to be most aware of...the sugar is figured into that count. Unless, you are watching your salt intake for medical reasons, low carbers typically need to add MORE salt (and magnesium, potassium rich foods) to their diet.

No, you do not need to eat WW food now. I don't eat much processed food at all, for two reasons: 1) I can eat a bigger portion of real/whole food versus processed food for the same nutritional profile 2) There are typically a good deal of preservatives and fillers in processed food.

Soup is fine. Just make sure the contents of the soup reflect a LC choice. Example: potato soup would be a high carb choice, but sausage/kale/cream would be a low carb choice. Broccoli and (real) cheese soup would be a low carb choice, but a stew full of potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and beets would be a high carb choice.

Don't apologize for questions! I am still learning myself and I know that I had/have a ton of questions too. Everyone here is so helpful, so ask away!

Here is a UK link to a carbohydrate food list https://www.diabetes.org.uk/upload/How we help/catalogue/carb-reference-list-0511.pdf

Here is another one for low carb foods http://www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/Carb-Counter.htm

Carbs are the enemy, not just sugar. Look at the labels on foods and try and go for those with 10g or less carbs per 100g. As said, low fat products often have extra sugar to compensate for the loss of taste that fat provides. Don't be scared of fat.

Have a read of www.dietdoctor.com/lchf, many on here manage their diabetes very well with this lifestyle.

Also the book Carbs & Cals is very helpful - lots of photos of foods with carb, sugar, protein and calorie values.

Is my daily Vitamin c drink okay it's got sweetening in

Also is diet coke and other drinks ok as long as they're diet?

Hi Im guessing the 49 is your HbA1c which means you have diabetes but only just so if you can reduce your carbs you should be able to reduce that quite quickly. Dont be complacent though any number above 45 is still diabetic, there really is no scale from good to bad when you have diabetes and there is no cure but it can be reversed through good self management. Mine was 100 on diagnosis then 52 and 44 so heading in the right direction. By the way welcome to the forum dont be afraid to ask questions there are a lot of helpful people here.
