TYPE 3 DIABETES

Hi,
I have been an insulin diabetic (Type 1) for 25 years
I have never had to take a large dose on insulin, but thought that this was just normal.
I had a clinic appointment this week and they have now said that I may be a 'Type 3' diabetic and have asked me not to take insulin on a trial basis for a period of 2 months, as I may not need it!
Apparently, this is a genetic type of diabetes.

I am obviously confused, as I have had 2 pregnancies and countless diabetic clinic appointments and have never been advised of this before.

Has anybody else encountered this?

Hi Joanna and welcome to the forum :) I'm afraid I don't know anything about "Type 3" diabetes but I expect someone on the forum will be able to give you the information you need and will be along soon.

Hi,
Type 3 is used and misused for a lot of things, but in the World Health Organisation document that defines the different types It lists T1 , T2 , it then has other types and gestational. As the other types section is in table 3 these types are sometimes called T3.

The first of these (and I have seen it called 3a) is MODY which is a genetic defect in the beta cells.
There are people who were originally diagnosed as T1 that have later been found to have MODY.
I can give you a link to an article about it... but remember this may not be what your doctor is thinking about at all!!

I think the info given in that link is very misleading, yes some people have called allzheimers 'T3' but that isn't official in any way.
