I think that if you are 'old' and/or overweight there is an assumption that you are type 2.
I'm in my 50s and low carb has brought my readings down so I'm pretty confident that I'm type 2.
I think if you are young and not overweight the doctors probably test more. I agree with
@bulkbiker that if you have consistently high blood sugar levels while doing low carb you may want to ask for more tests. But if not very low carb then I would try that first. I do less than 20 grams a day. I do find that some artificial sweeteners raise my blood sugar levels but I consider that a side effect. If I didn't have those and had high readings on less than 20 grams of carbs a day I may want more tests.
