Hi everyone.
I'm new here but looking for some help and advice. I'm a 31 year old man, was diagnosed with type one 10 years ago. Struggled for a lot of those years with my diabetes as I just didn't want to deal with it. Got it back on track however and I'm doing great. Probably around 18 months ago I started noticing problems with my erections. They weren't lasting as long and weren't as strong as usual and over time it got worse. Fast forward to now and I haven't managed to have full sex for over a year (not for the lack of trying!). Spoke to the GP numerous times and asked them to check my testosterone levels which came back ok. Was prescribed different dosages of viagra which done absolutely nothing for me. Then was prescribed cialis, which again, done nothing. I'm not really sure where to turn now. Not due to see my diabetes specialist Dr till February 2022. Asked gp for a referral to urology but said this will take a while. I really don't know what to do now as I'm far too young to not be having sex! I still get the urge just as I always have but the little guy isn't playing ball! I have nerve damage in my legs which could be playing a factor. Any and all advice would be massively appreciated. Thanks so much for reading.
Hi @Jagger77 ,
Welcome to the forum.
When you say "back on track." (management wise.) What are your A1c figures now? & in comparison to what they were..?
Are we talking about a "short sharp shock" regarding tightening up management, before you discovered your issue.?
Just thinking outside the box here...
Hey, sorry i should have clarified. When diagnosed my a1c was really bad, if i remember correctly it was around the 16% mark. I was maybe 4 years in before I actually started looking after myself. I've kept on top of everything for years now and my last a1c was 7.4% earlier this year. The issues didn't start until 18 months ago so I'd already been looking after myself for a long time before these issues started. I've never and any sort of erection issues before in my life. I also thought potentially could have been low testosterone as I found myself really tired a lot, no energy, mild testicular pain and the ed. I've addressed all of the issues with my gp numerous times but nothing seems to be getting investigated any further and all I'm told is that it's due to diabetes.
No worries buddy.. Just trying to establish if it could be due to a rapid drop of A1c in a short space of time due to tightening up managment? I had a simalar "kick in the teeth" after finding a sweet spot A1c a few years back with the eyes..?
I'd never even heard of the condition or knew it a "diabetic thing?" (At the time...)
The eye mularky is pretty much well documented with drastic "tweaks" to managment. It is preferred "slow & steady..?"
Yep, doctors are easy to blame any condition on the "boogie."
Could your intial change in performance be just causing you "stage fright?"
Do you currently have a partner you could open up to..?
Yes I had problems with my eyes too, was terrified for a while until they sort of went back to normal! I've got a partner who I've been with for 8 years and she knows all about it. She's very understanding about it and we keep trying but it just doesn't work and it's frustrating me more than anything. They blame diabetes all the time for me, which it might well be but there's been no other blood work or investigations other than the low testosterone. As soon as that came back normal, they just said it was due to diabetes.

From what you are saying regarding your relationship. You're in a good positive place to work from..
Things sometimes don't allways go to plan, which can knock confidence & one or two set backs can prey on the mind prior to the next event?
Being sensible about things, we can't always judge our performance comparing with the "adult film industry."
I feel there can be a fair bit of pressure on both parties to compete with the "smoke & mirrors" on the high shelf..
Hopefully, the guys on here who have or had been in a similar situation. Can give pointers regarding their own experinced.
Kind regards. I'm confident you will find your "mojo."
Hi Jagger,
I am the partner of a diabetic who is in a similar position, so I did not want to read and run. I'm your age, he's older.
Around 3/4 years ago it started with them being not as strong and not as long. Long story short, no medications have helped. They want to give him a pump to try help, but that has been delayed currently. We have seen numerous specialists over the last few years and basically been told it has happened due to his lack of management to control his diabetes when he was younger. In the last 2.5 years he has only once been able been able to maintain one.
Hey Tigger,
Thanks for your comment. Sounds very similar to me. We haven't had sex in a year due to this and I'm noticing it's getting worse. I've read up about the pump and heard mixed reviews about it but i suppose it's like everything else, will work for some and won't for others. I had poor control too for the first 4 years then for the past 6 years I've been really good and managing very well but don't know if the damage was done when i was poorly controlled or if it's just one of those things. The statistics for diabetic men experiencing some form of ed are quite shocking. I hope you find something that helps
Thanks very much! Appreciate your comments
