hey garr thanks for replying the buddy system seems fantastic idea, i can see if i can get that rolling across the ukI reckon there should be some sort of 'Buddy' system, where newly diagnosed T1s could be put in touch with someone who's been living with it and controlling it for a while. I'd happily volunteer to be a buddy, and it would have been brilliant to have someone to get advice from who actually knew what they were talking about. I would attend meet ups but they're all for T2s around these parts.
Angus in Scotland, I'm going to mention it on my next MOT, but it's been 13 months since my last one, wonder if that means I'm unroadworthy........If you don't mind me asking where are you from?
the thing is with organising meet ups & stuff like that is you'd find a certain ammount of people would come for the first month or two then not botherSome hospitals have buddy systems but it would be great if brought in as a National Option.
My local hospital has meetings to include patients for all gastro problems to improve services and listen... But nothing for diabetics....
I met a young lady today that has been diabetic since 8 and being 16 years on and wanting a pump. High erratic levels but has been so off put by hospital consultants that she will only go to a GP now and with hba1c of 9+ obviously isn't mastering it with a GP....
It is so sad..
I've recently joined meetup app n groups in my new area and wondering whether to organise something locally for all diabetics...but not via diabetes websites....
That's a very good idea, it can take a very long time to thoroughly educate yourself about the condition. The hardest thing is living and breathing it hour by hour, until the point where we've accepted that as individuals can you really get on top of it, like brushing your teeth twice a day and going to the toilet, it's our lifestyle and something that just has to be done.I reckon there should be some sort of 'Buddy' system, where newly diagnosed T1s could be put in touch with someone who's been living with it and controlling it for a while.
