Type1. Erratic blood sugar readings

I've had diabetes type 1 for 20 years with reasonable readings. For the past year I have struggled to keep my levels on an even keel and my last blood test showed an average of 11. I eat healthily and take exercise regularly. I've also noticed that exercise is raising my levels as well when usually it has done the opposite. I have had a difficult year which my hospital and GP are aware of. Any ideas please as to what I am doing wrong and any advice on how to improve things would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Lisa

Hi Lisa, unfortunately, it's difficult to give any advice without much information. As you say, you've had a difficult year, which suggests that it has been reasonably stressful and this on its own can cause blood glucose variability without you specifically doing anything wrong.

Even with stress, you should start by getting a full blood panel done, including thyroid and coeliac checks. This will make sure that you have no deficiencies that could be affecting you.

Another point is hormones. As you don't say how old you are (and I can't see your profile), this can also play a factor in glucose levels.

Hi Lisa, I have suffered a similar experience recently. But have been under an awful lot of stress. My stress levels have recently dropped and my bloods seemed to have calmed down a bit. I believe stress can play havoc with bg readings.

Hi Lisa, I seem to be similar to yourself - 20+ years and last 12 months seem to be all over the show. Admittedly, looking back now, I should have been better controlled, Hba1c was usually around 8.5% give or take. Earlier last year I decided to go revisit a dietitian; this led to other options to look at and eventually in December I was changed from Levemir to Tresiba. The hospital decided maybe the insulin had become ineffective. I'm very much still on a new learning curve and have now also bought the Freestyle Libre blood scanner. This has given such an insight into what my sugar levels are doing in-between meals, showing me how much I spike straight after meals and how sometimes I hypo through the night without always realising. I am finding it very difficult to sort everything out at the moment, but am so much more aware of problem areas i.e. what foods I thought were 'safe' aren't necessarily so for myself.
What I'm trying to point out is may be your body has changed it's approach to your condition and changes may be worth considering. This forum has been a goldmine of information which is making me more aware of things to try.
Good luck, hope you can find a solution.
