type2 and alcohol consumption

lisa1980

Newbie
I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I currently tale 1000mg metaformin per day. I do not drink regular prob under one night a month, I used to have perhaps 10-12 25ml measures of vodka with diet coke in a night,

So what would be ok to drink, like I said I go out perhaps 1 night a month sometimes less, but when I do I like to enjoy myself, I dont get blind drunk but it's usually enough to give me a hangover.

Is there a compromise, if this amount is not a good idea I could prob live with half that amount and just have diet coke instead.

I've been trying to get this info for a while but most people just quote the government guidelines, I want reaistic not government guidelines.

Any help appreciated.

Lisa.

I drink a couple of glasses of wine at weekends and I take 1000mg x2 metformin I dont have any problems but if I have a couple more glasses I feel very bloated and burpy (is that a word?) the next day

Hi Lisa,

Im type 2 like you, I used to be on 2000mg of metformin and if I went out I would, like you drink several vodkas with diet coke. As a diabetic vodka is one of the lowest sugar alcoholic drink so thats great. I would always make sure though that those you go out with know that you are diabetic. I would always tell my friends if I started acting different to my normal drunk self or if I should collapse that maybe they should get some sugar into me. As I believe a hypo can make you look like your drunk. Also alcohol can lower your blood sugar levels.

Saying all that, I personally never had a problem.

Maybe treat yourself to a portion of chips on the way home to make sure your BG doesn't go too low over night.

Hi there, I'm not on any medication but I still get horrible acid reflux after drinking nowadays. (I say that but I'm only 20)

I never drank at all until 17 and even then like you once a month or less because I chaperone my mother. I have never ever been drunk but before diabetes on the veryrare occasion I did drink people were fascinated that no amount of booze would affect me. But doesn't mean that wasn't damaging my liver

2 cans of cider and I hit 'Lo' one night and woke up at 19mmol

It's always best to snack with alcohol or eat a good meal beforehand.

I don't know what your tolerance is like (therefore how much you are consuming) but you really don't need to get drunk, though you did say you don't get 'blind drunk. Do you really want a hangover? If its anything like how I feel waking up hyperglycemic its not something you want to do to yourself lol

Could you experiment with how much drink you can take /without/ getting drunk?

At the same time everyone likes to do something to let their hair down and you're not reckless or anything.

I'm really not sure about sugar content of drinks affecting anything. I expected that after sugary, low alcohol volume cider my blood sugar would go up initially and go down a bit whilst the liver was busy dealing with it. Wasn't the case though, it's so unpredictable >_<

Yeah. Eat with alcohol, test regularly and try not to get too merry I guess.

Good luck. This is all very new and confusing and complicated! Have fun and stay safe xxxxx

One reason why people keep quoting the Government guidlines is because once you exceed them the fact that you have diabetes is academic. You will get the same damage that the Government says everyone else is going to get.

Spirits do not have sugar in so from that point of view vodka is fine. Any mixer you have with it will probably have some sugar in and that is what should be taken into account.

Alcohol interferes with the function of the liver and so any liver rush you might have had to stabilise your sugar levels might not happen until the liver has filtered alcohol from the blood. The Mayoclinic says that low blood sugar is a symptom of a hangover for this very reason. If you are prone to hypo's you must make allowance for this.

Hi,Lisa :)

A hangover symptom is a signal that something has not right.

I gave up drinking when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Yet a few weekends ago I had so called hangover to which alcohol was not taken.
The cause was as Squire Fulwood explained.

Good luck with the necessary adjustments that you will have to make so you can continue to enjoy your wee drink.
( I have now got used to boring drinks and imaginary wee drams etc; )

I was worried people would think if I'm a killjoy if I went on another 'ALCOHOL IS BAD' rant lol

As touched on before a hangover is a clear sign your body is hurting :( Don't hurt it X(

It must feel like everyone is telling you you can't do this and you can't do that but it is for your own good and quality of life. Alcohol is a poison to everyone diabetic or not so everyone ha to be aware just because it is legal does not mean its harmless. But as you get more used to diabetes you can supposedly know if/when you can take your chances. There are a few diabetics here who can have a couple of drinks with no drastic effects and then people like me

We're all here for you and wish you the best ok x
