Type2 Metformin 6 yrs now with NovoMix®30

My Wife has Type2, was diagnosed in 2002, placed on Metformin Tablets but now is on Metformin Suspension. Poor Control right now.

Yesterday the Diabetes Team at the local Hospital said that she would need to go on Insulin, and she has been put on NovoMix®30. She takes 10 before breakfast, and 10 before evening meal, she is to continue to take Metformin Solution of 10ml during breakfast and 10ml during evening meal.

Started on Insulin last night. This morning, after breakfast, checked weight, and she's put on 4lbs already. After a long battle with weight, and managing to lose more than 2 stone, this is all she needs. She feels sick and very swollen.

Please can anybody help as she is not due to see the Diabetes Team until Monday, and says she is going to stop taking Insulin, as she does not want to put weight on.

I think that this initial phase might be Fluid Retention, hence feeling bloated and sick.

Could drinking plenty of water would help improve things?

Anybody got ideas, please help us, thanks.

P.S. We are in East Anglia (Cambridgeshire).

Hello

I think you should phone your wife's GP and explain things to them. If your wife is suffering from fluid retention then the GP will be able to prescribe something to help.

Insulin only puts weight on people in an indirect way meaning that if someone injects too much of it and it causes blood sugar to drop very low, then they end up having to eat more than they would like. As your wife has only just started on insulin then this is not really going to be the case.

Some people though are allergic to insulin so have a look at the info sheet inside the Novomix and have a read.

Hi

I'm on similar insulin to your wife, and havent put on any weight in the last 9 weeks (maybe the couple Ilbs I lost initially whilst in hospt, likely stress, terrified to eat, and general diabetic crisis type state)

Weight can go up and down by a few pounds anyway (esp for women) and I can be Ilbs heavier over the course of a day so it might be temporary. However what I was told by the DSN was that I would put on any weight Id lost (hard to tell, had been on a diet) and some people do report putting on weight due to insulin, and not always due to eating at hypos either.
Insulin is anabolic and the dynamic between that and you food you eat (how it converts glucose, storage of fat in the liver etc) so I believe it can be responsible for weight gain. This is esp true if your diet is very carb heavy.

It is however very unlikely she has put it on overnight Ithink so would get her GP to check her out, and check out any potential cause of water retention if she is actually feeling bloated. Drinking water will help retention but maybe she should weigh herself again at same time tomorrow and see.

Im not sure about mixed insulin and meformin but with mixed insulin people have reported weight gain due to the need to snack to avoid hypos. Managing your snacks and meals is very worthwhile is she is worried about weight but dont let her stop her insulin - she obviously needs it.
