Uncontrollable blood sugar

I've been a type 1 diabetic for 36 years and have been fairly well controlled. However my blood sugars have suddenly been all over the place. It doesn't seem to matter how much QA I inject, my BS just doesn't seem to come down. Throughout the day I usually give myself 36 QA units. At present I'm having to give extra insulin every 2 hours or so at 20 units a time. My BS has regularly been in the 20s and it's not shifting.

I just don't know what to do....

Have you done some basal testing?

Also, how long has your current insulin been in use (out the fridge)? I'm having an absolute nightmare with mine spoiling and my blood sugar goes up and up as I'm basically injecting water.

As well as the questions above, has this been happening for a day or two or are you talking weeks?

Have you tested for ketones?

Checking basal & that pens are ok etc is things you can do now but I would also be speaking to your diabetes team ASAP as that's a lot of insulin to be having so often

As I'm using so much insulin it hasn't been out of the fridge for long.

Ketones are clear. This has been happening over the last 2 days.

What do you mean by basal testing?

I'm wondering if it could be the start of the menopause? Do hormones affect BS levels???

Thanks for your replies

Hormones do affect bg levels yes so that is a possibility.

Basal testing is checking your back ground insulin is correct on its own so that you know your bolus is working with the food you're eating,

I'll tag @noblehead and @himtoo to see if one of them will post you the link explaining it :)
