Type 2 Unexpected Blood Glucose Reading

For personal reasons, I have stopped taking medication and am relying on diet and exercise. I hadn't tested my blood for ages and after two days fasting, I thought I maybe should test. To my astonishment it was up at 16. I went anoher two days without food and when I tested it again, it had risen to 16.5. How is that possible? To go four days without food and have a reading like that seems very strange. Surely, with no food at all for so long, the sugar should have been very low indeed. I'd welcome any suggestions.

Google “ gluconeogenesis & hyperglycaemia “

why have you stopped your meds and even more so why a 4 day fast. you need a relationship with food that can maintain your body whilst controlling your bloods. just not eating is nor wise your body will switch to starvation mode ie lean burn of its energy supplies whilst using your muscles as fuel. you need to test. having numbers as high as 16 then meds are needed, once you get a better control you can use diet to reduce an eliminate your meds if possible. being that high is harmful.

I think your best plan might be to stop fasting, eat 2 or 3 meals a day, and do plenty of testing before and 2 hours after eating. If your numbers are still high, then you need to either change your diet to a more suitable one, or re-think your meds.

Hello and welcome to the forum. May I ask if this is your first fast and what meds you are prescribed please? This information will help members give better advice more suited to you. I do hope that your is a wet fast rather than a dry one.
An alternative for you may be Intermittent Fasting, that is fasting for most of the day and eating in a short window of time. There is a sub section of this forum for fasting, scroll down the forum list page to find it.

@Daviemac - Add to the other questions, are your test strips in date, had you washed your hands when you tested, and what had you been drinking during your fasting period?
