unexpected/unexplained hypo

Hi everyone. Just wanted to ask if anyone has experienced a hypo with a reading of 6.3? I am a Type 1 diabetic and lastnight I did my usual glucose test at 6.45 which is about half an hour before dinner, my reading was 6.3 and I was happy with that. About a quarter of an hour later I felt really weak and my hands started to shake and sweat began pouring off me. I didn't think of a hypo because of my reading of 6.3, but began to feel quite afraid before I knew it I was drinking some full fat coke and a small amount of lucozade. Because of doing that and feeling scared and slightly confused I did not re test. When it did occur to me to re test I thought with having had the coke and lucozade I would not get a meaningful reading. I managed to eat my dinner and the "hypo" feeling disappeared. I knocked a unit of my novo rapide off to cover my meal. When I tested at 1.am this morning my reading was 12.1! Any thoughts or ideas please.

You did the right getting the glucose into you rather than wait around and test again, it may be that your previous reading of 6.3 was a false reading as the symptoms you describe does sound like a full-blown hypo, if it happens again treat then test your bg to see what's going on.

Hope all is well today!

Thanks noblehead so far I have been ok today apart from having a dull sort of headache which again suggests to me I did have a hypo. Always feel less isolated and afraid having this forum and people like you replying. Have a good weekend

I've had a seriously bad hypo after reading somewhere betwen 17 and 20!!
Thought it really odd.. But was xmas, had parents n friends staying, done dinner etc, had insulin...

BANG!!!!

Had something from my dinner preps on finger... Yep, I didnt wash hands... Honest-i cant do that 100% of time.... Who honestly does.....

Within minutes I was on the floor.....and it was horrible , then trying to keep levels up... As pump had recommended extra bolus, i put it up to 250% basals too!!!

A learning curve for my cocking up...

Bur yes... Also my cgm will tell me I'm 3 and my blood tells me I'm 6.8.....

With cgm if I believe it... Depending on time of night or day... And activitys... And food... I know I can drop in Bg levels hugely in less rhan 7 minutes.....

Hi Coco4

I think I may have mentioned this before in another thread but I do recall my specialist telling me many moons ago that a rapidly falling blood sugar can produce the symptoms of a hypo, irrespective of whether it actually ever drops below 4mmol. So, suppose 10 minutes before you actually tested that your level was 10mmol and in that short space of time it managed to drop by 3.7mmol to 6.3mmol, then theoretically you could experience what you described. Not saying this is definitely what happened, but it's something for you to consider.

hi dowuchyalike thats an interesting bit of info it would certainly be a feasible explanation. Hope it doesn't happen too often especially while I'm out. I obviously always have a surgery drink and carb food with me, but it was still very disconcerting, thanks, enjoy the rest of the weekend :D
