unsure about results

hello I wonder if someone could explain to me about my results as I am getting very confused. I was told I was diabetic 10 weeks ago and given metformin which I really didn't want to take as I take so many pills as it is so I thought before I did I would try to cut down on sugar/carbs as much as I could. the bit of paper the nurse gave me had HbA1c 76 mmol/mol on it which I didn't really understand. anyway over 2 months later I decided to get a glucose tester and it has given me a reading of 7.1 and I don't understand why it is so different from nurses reading. I have to go back in a month and wondered if someone could tell me wether I am doing it right with my diet and if it has made any difference. if it hasn't I guess I will have to take the pills. thank you for any help you could give me, micky.

Your HbA1c is an average of the last 2-3 months of blood sugar levels in your blood and is measure in mmol/mol

The finger prick test you do at home is an instant measurement of your blood sugar level at the time you prick your finger and is measured in mmol/litre

Your HbA1c is kind of the average of your finger pricks over the last 2-3 months if you did a finger prick every minute.

7.1 isn't too bad was it before or after eating?

76 is pretty high so you have done the right thing in reducing your carb intake.

See the link at the top of the post for a more detailed explanation.

Hope that helps

thank you mark, I think I understand but im still not sure wether it has come down at all. I am finding it quite a big life style change withno cakes and sweets which I did eat a lot if but I am determined to sort myself out! I had eaten about twenty minutes before I did that test, some chicken slices and 3 tuc crakers with cheese, for my lunch. thank you again, micky

This was the one I should have shown you

If you averaged 7 mmol/litre all the time you would get an HbA1c of about 42 which is in the pre diabetes range so you are doing very well indeed.

try to cut all white bread and biscuits too , white flour is even worse than sugar...most do not know that , but avoiding white flour will help you to get your numbers down too and not to spike as rapidly too

phew thank you for that, maybe I wont need to take tablets :) I feel so much better now that I realise I am doing ok because I was getting a bit down about it all. I was looking at your readings and notice you have lost a lot of weight too, I guess when we can see a difference it makes us feel better, thank you, micky

thank you freema, I don't eat white bread anyway just nutty wholemeal but I have cut down a lot on that too and no biscuits (boo hoo) I probably eat too much chicken now and cauliflower and cheese, I do eat quite a lot. Micky

There is absolutely nothing wrong with chicken, cauliflower, or cheese. Eat as much as you like (as long as the chicken isn't covered with breadcrumbs!

Your nutty wholemeal bread may have to go. Have you got a Lidl near you? They sell high protein rolls that are very low carb, full of protein, and full of fiber. 29p each. Sliced in half and toasted they are delicious. They also freeze well.

Its a pleasure... you are doing really well so someone needs to tell you. I'm very happy to do that. yes fixing my insulin resistance has helped me loose a lot of weight.. still have a bit more to go. My readings are usually between 4 and 6 mmol/l. It's possible to do this without meds (I took metformin for 3 weeks and have never felt so ill.. or in need of the loo).
