Unusual Readings

My fasting BG readings have always been pretty good yet last night they went up from 11.7 at bedtime to 16.3 this morning and I hadn't eaten since 6pm last night.

Is this likely to be the dawn phenomenon?

I was put on a slightly new regime yesterday. I was previous on 15u Lantus at night which has just been changed to 16u yesterday.

I was also working to 1:15 ratio all day until yesterday. I now work to 1:15 in the morning and 1:10 for the rest of the day.

I was expecting a few hypos until I got it all sorted out, not continued highs. I guess it may just take a few days to sort itself out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

As your BG rose without you eating any carbs it suggests that your not taking enough background in the evening, the pattern you are looking for is that your before bed reading is the same as your morning reading, this is the guide my DSN gave me, so maybe try tweaking this a few mmol/l and see.

If you're not already then try keeping a diary of your BG readings and insulin taken and time, this is good to identify patterns and adjust insulin doses accordingly.

Agree with Juicy, however never make changes going by just one days readings, all sorts of things can lead to higher bg readings such as illness and stress.

Thanks for your advice.

I guess because I only changed my background last night it might take a few days to take effect and today may have been something else causing a slight high.

I'll pay close attention to it over the next few days.
