Good morning. Before I was diagnosed I could be up 5 times a night for a wee. Was diagnosed. Started tablets and was not getting up at all for a few weeks. Now I'm back to getting up 3-5 times a night.
I stop drinking at 9 o'clock. And that's coffee. And usually go to bed at 10 o'clock.
Don't know what else to try. Xx

Do you self test? At a guess you may have high blood sugars again

Type 2 diagnosed 24/01/2013.
Novomix 30, Victoza, Simvistatin.

Yes I agree could be high blood sugar. I had the same problem and started a thread sometime ago called Nighttime toilet visits might be worth reading up on it. Once my sugars were under control only get up once or maybe not at all .

Hi. No I don't self test. Nurse told me not too. I joined this lovely site a couple of days ago and am now considering getting a monitor etc. Getting loads of excellent advice from all the lovely people on this site xxx

Hi. Yes, do get a meter as it will guide you on blood sugar. I suspect as others have said that your blood sugar is still high at least at night. Aim for a morning fasting level of around 5 - 7mmol and below 8'ish at bedtime. Your last HBA1C is quite high so the right low-carb diet is essential and the 500gm of Metformin may need to be increased; perhaps that's planned. Metformin is a good safe drug but doesn't have that much effect on blood sugar even at max 2000gm dose; diet is the key.

metformin takes a few weeks to kick in, so I don't know if it would have any effect on you water works in the first 3 weeks.
3x500 metformin is worth talking with the Dr about. and seems to be a common dose
If in the UK you can get a one off finger prick test at a chemist, first thing before you have anything to eat.
If it was me I'd ring and make an appointment with your Dr, I would follow it up whether it's diabetic related or not.
ask Dr for a meter or buy one

I too will visit the bathroom several times over the night even though my blood sugar is well regulated (woke up to a fbg of 4.1 today).

I also wonder whether you take any meds with a diuretic effect?.

And chiming in with above posters, I definitely think you should get a glucose meter. Here (Denmark) I got one for free when contacting Bayer. They seem to hand them out like candy for free, the reason being that they earn the money on the test strips.

Could well be high bg that is the cause, when you get a bg meter you can then decide if this is the case.

Coffee and all caffeine drinks acts as a diuretic so these are best avoided later in the day or eliminated altogether if you can, I drink decaff tea's and coffee and noticed a big difference in the amount of times I need to go to the loo during the day and night.

For a long time before I was diabetic (my bloods were normal and not even pre-diabetic) I had to visit the loo several times a night, and similar during the mornings. It was a standing joke in my family. I had no health problems at all. It was all down to drinking too much tea and/or water during the evenings. I now have my last drink about 8pm and go to bed at 11-30ish maybe midnight. Since doing that I only ever get up once, and my morning visits are very much decreased. I was also advised that we can train our bladders better by not rushing to the loo automatically, or when we think we may need to go but haven't yet got the urge. Leave it until the actual urge arrives, then wait 5 or 10 minutes.

I used to get up during the Night too. Since changing diet and controlling my BG I NEVER get up during the night. I am sure I could not have done this without a meter.

Perhaps it's something other than diabetes. I've never had that problem even when bloods are high I only go about 4 times a day.

Thank you all for your replies. I do like diet coke but only one can a day. I used to be the other way and my friends nicknamed me the camel haha.
Sometimes I can visit the toilet and go downstairs only to have to come straight back up and go again. Doctor did say when first diagnosed that if the only thing he could stop was my umpteen visits a night then he would be happy.
Went out for dinner today and my family had cooked lentils instead of potato and loads of veg and lamb. Was a lovely meal and surprise. Xx

Hi. Don't forget as you get older your kidneys do much of their urine elimination during the night. I currently have some bladder problems and have been amazed at how much I produce during the night compared with the day thru measurement.

I took this advice from this forum over a year ago and it worked, consistently last month started to drink coffee that contained caffeine.
"Guess what" I started to get up in the night more than expected, that Jar of coffee is now empty and I am back to normal now that I am back on decaff, unbelievable yet true.
