Hi
Have been on Metformin SR 500mg x2 at breakfast for 10 months now (preventative measures only)
Current HBA1C=5.9%
Have lost 1 stone since being on Metformin (no change in diet-as deemed healthy enough)
I have Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver and Metabolic Syndrome
My cholesterol is 5.7 (non fasting) and now endocrinologist wants me to go on statins. He said MF has regularised my blood sugar levels and aided weight loss so now wants to try and address cholesterol/fatty liver problem.
I'm just wary of taking statins as there seems so much bad press about them and my GP states that 7.5 reading would be the benchmark before he would prescribe statins(Yet another contretemps looks likely beween GP and endo as happened over me taking MF!)
Any thoughts?

I would take the Statin as a reading of 7.5 would be very high whatever your GP thinks....... :?
Yours is 5.7 which as far as I and my Endo are concerned is high, other's have different ideas about that. My level was once 3.2 until an enforced diet change shot it up to 7 and then is now back down to 4.8. I still am working at getting it lower. My choice.

The only Statin I ever had any side effects from was Simvastatin which is well documented as being the cheapest and possibly the least effective, although it works for some. I now take Atorvastatin, and have done for some time, with no ill effects and definite advantages as far as I am concerned.

As for the GP and Endo...... Your Endo is far better qualified than any GP. You are also in the 'at risk' category. Prevention in my view is better than any possible complications later in life. Something I have already experienced with a Heart Op in 2004 (CABG x 3). :(

There is an extensive thread about statins on the Forum which includes some of the 'scare stories' and also some more impartial and sensible advice. It is your choice but as one who has seen the benefits of them I would advise you to take them.
