LATEST UPDATE. For anyone who's remotely interested !

I've been seeing my diabetic nurse over the past 3 weeks...
Tweaking and trying out new ideas....

Now I'm to carb count as thus : ( Novorapid insulin / bolus )
In the daytime; pre dinner 7g carbs = 1 unit. ( it was 10:1, then it went to 8:1 then we tried 5:1 , this made me drop too low quickly so I moved it to 7:1)
Dinner time and beyond 6g Carbs= 1 unit . ( apparently I go all high in the eves hence this new tweak )
Post and pre meal corrections : 1 unit of Novorapid for each 2mmol/ L that I wish to reduce my glucose levels by. ( it was 4mmol/L to 1,then swiched to 3mmol/L to 1.... and now its 2 mmol/L to 1unit )

Basal Insulin ( Levemir ) , 14 units at bed time, 18 units in the morning when I wake up. ( started out as 12 units for both night and day ... now this )

I have been told to go Back on METFORMIN ! but instead of the 2000mg daily, I take 1000.
1 x 500mg in am , and another 500mg in the eves.

Maybe some of you will have some ideas ?

Why do you think the diabetic nurse swiched me from Levemire basal insulin from Abasgalar ? ( she never did explain that )

Also why did she suggest I need to do twice daily basal insulin ? my brother and father both only do it once at night and overall take about half the amount I do. ( Each take maybe as much as 20 units ) Father is a T2 ( but possibly a T1.5 ) brother is a T1.

Why am I taking a lot of basal insulin ?

I'm a recently diagnosed T1( or to be exact a T1.5 ? ) after 7 years of being an incorrectly diagnosed "T2 "

Questions and questions !!.....

Thanks, Shoran .

Heya Shoran - we each have our own different physiologies so basal doses are adjusted according to your own needs, it's not something you can compare. Has your DSN asked you to try doing any basal fasting tests ? This is the foundation for your control so getting the dose right is crucial. https://www.mysugr.com/en/blog/basal-rate-testing/

Splitting a dose means that because it is not fully effective over a 24 hour period, so it can start to lose it's efficacy after say 12 hours so splitting covers this overlap, unsure why your DSN changed you I don't know enough about Absalagar to compare it to Levemir, but I have to be honest I didn't get on with Levemir myself, instead I switched to a longer profile insulin called Tresiba which was brilliant, flat profile and lasted around 36 hours so no issues with losing it's efficacy or even forgetting a dose.

It can take a good week or 2 for changes to background insulin to really take effect and the trick to type 1 is to change 1 thing at a time, start playing around with ratios/doses etc can become a hypo/hyper nightmare so just take your time, slowly slowly, Also bear in mind the current heatwave will also be having an effect on levels too, so keep hydrated.

Excellent- thank you for the basal link - I just read it quickly.
It's certainly worth trying that !

Why the diabetes nurse never suggested doing exactly that is beyond me.

Yes you're right - one step at at time. etc

One needs much patience.

(I have that ...but it's not infinite !)

I appreciate your input,

Best,
Shoran
