So was diagnosed!!! with diabetes type 1 in july of this year.Went to see my doctor and my doctor told me when i go to see the consultant to ask to get the GAD antibodies test done while there. So I got the test done and a couple of week later my diabetic nurse rang me to give me the results which she'd told me they where negative! so I asked her what does this mean??her reply was"this would mean that you wouldn't be type 1 diabetic"a little hastily maybe?!?!so ok than?!?!?!My mother is type 2 and also think my dad is type 2 also.I asked at a early appointment that a had a feeling that something wasn't right years prior to been diagnosed,I asked would it be possible in been type 2 her reply"highly unlikely"I wouldn't fit the,so called type 2 category!!

So only last week my diabetic nurse rang to say that she'd spoken to my consultant and he said just to see how things go!!! so I@m in limbo,So I brought the peptide test up and she said that they don't do that till after 5 years of diagnosis.in other words were waiting for my pancreas to give in,maybe it might never happen!!! maybe I'm type 2,feel a little in limbo atm

Hi. The diagnosis of Late onset T1 versus T2 is a walk into the unknown. I was diagnosed as T2 and still am but am confident I'm actualy Late onset T1. In my case and many others you present at diagnosis as slim and having lost weight unexpectedly just prior to diagnosis. You then find that any tablets prescribed work for a while and then fail. You then end up on insulin when blood sugar continues to creep up. I gave up on my diabetes GPs and had a GAD and c-peptide done privately after 7 years. The GAD was negative but the c-peptide showed very low insulin which I had expected. There are two interpretations of the negative GAD. The first is that Late onset T1 can be caused by viruses, pancreatitis and so on; not just GAD antibodies. Second is that according to the 2015 NICE T1 Guidelines document, the GAD test becomes more unreliable as the years pass after diagnosis whereas the c-peptide becomes more reliable. So, if you are slim and tablets no longer work then Late onset T1 is likely. If you have excess weight and haven't yet gone thru three'ish tablet types then T2 remains possible. See how things go and if the HBa1C despite low-carbing goes up above 8% as mine did you know you need insulin.

ya had all the typical symptoms of type 1 in july where i spent 3 day in hospital, and am slim so yeah!! seems like abit of a guessing game and it is really annoying as you would probably gather.rarely do i go above 8 after meals!!!at cinemas and though i d test the pancreas out a little ;) by getting large popcorn SWEET!!! and even then I tested and it was in the 5s,i know It could be the honeymoon period but ya,having had my gad test come back negative after having the test so early after diagnosis I though was a little strange but time will tell i suppose but ya the c-peptide would be useful,I've also ready up on mody very slim but you never know right.:)

I was told from day one that even if the antibody test comes back as negative, I will still be type 1.
The test came back positive in excess of 2200 as it happens but I was told the result was immaterial. You can have a negative GAD and still be type1.
I'd do some of your own research TBH, I don't know why that's the case ^^^^ as I can't remember, my brain was like custard around the time of diagnosis.

I don t know if that fully the case though,GAD result come back positive doesn't that mean a autoimmune attack is in action?!?!? where as mine come back negative doesn't that mean theres no proof of a autoimmune attack on the pancreas? So It wouldn't fully rule out type 2 :)

Yes, to help differentiate you need the c-Peptide as well. In many ways the test results may not matter too much. If your blood sugar is high despite low-carbing and being slim then you need pancreas stimulating drugs or even insulin. If, like yourself, your blood sugar is still well controlled you may be early stage Late onset T1 but not need much medication. If you are really slim T2 is less likely but possible.
