hi everyone, i would just like to update you all on my mum. so far she has been doing really well we have got her bg levels down to an average of 11. sometimes they are great at about 6.7 to 6.9. she feels quite well at these levels but they fluctuate sometimes they will go up to 8.00 or 9. and we cannot figure out why! she is eating the right foods now and has become accustomed to not eating carbs she is doing really well im so proud of her!
but the past two days her bloods have been up and down and she hasnt altered anything, for instance yesterday she got up and her bg was 10,5 ( not the lowest she has had on rising, once it was 9.3) then after breakfast it went to 10.9 which was really good because it usually rises higher than that at that time of day, however before her lunch it went to 11.4!! for no reason! why?? then after lunch it dropped to 5.4 ? then went to 5.9 and after tea it went to 6.9 and after wards just before the lantus at night it went to 8.5. went she got up this morning it was 8.9 which was the lowest ever in the morning. however she feels really bad with headaches and numbness in her legs and sweating profusely. two hours after breakfast her levels where 12.7 and she has the same breakfast every day. we cannot understand what is going on! it is so frustrating. can anyone shed any light on this please or anyone had the same thing. obviously we are altering the amount of insulin she is taking to accomodate the bg and food intake.
thanks p.x

I have no experience of anything like this, but I have an analytical brain.
Has your mum ever been checked for gastroparesis? It's a known complication and causes delayed stomach emptying. My T1 husband has it and in his case, it causes nausea in the mornings. It would fit what you are describing for your Mum. It wouldn't hurt to ask the medics to test for it.
Also should I ever need it, I hope my daughter would care for me like you do for your Mum

hi thanks for replying hanadr, ive not heard of that but i will ask the doc. ive just bought that book by dr bernstein the diabetes solution, so there may be something in that. thanks for the advice tho. its a mystery isnt it.
but as i forgot to say earlier mum has lost a stone in weight also since starting on this diet. she has been trying to lose weight for years! she is so happy about that, she thought i was joking when i told her the other day when i weighed her.lol. she is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel :D :D :D :D
thanks for the kind comments ,i think your daughter would look after you just the same, even tho i hope you never need it.

If there is a routine of being high in the morning, then lower in the afternoon and increasing again in the evening..

I ponder if mum is suffering from dawn phanonomon (sp) and with Lantus not lasting a full 24 hours?

It might be that you need to be looking at splitting her Lantus so that the night jab covers her needs durning the night and into the morning, and then a morning jab that covers her the rest of the day...

This would mean that more Lantus could be given to cover the DP and morning needs, and then Less to cover the rest when she needs Less background this would also enable the Lantus to cover the 24 hours...

If you decide that a split might be a good idea to try, then start with a even split of her normal dose, give her the first split dose at her normal time in the evening, and then her next split dose about a 12 hours later.. Monitor her levels closely so that you can see which injection needs adjusting, this can be dose or sometimes even moving the actually timing can help to solve problems.

hi jopar, mums bg levels do seem to rise in the morning then they dip towards the afternoon and evening.i will think about splitting the lantus. i cant ask her gp or consultant because as you probably know from previous posts they are both hopeless.she is on 30 lantus at the moment and still adjusting the nuvorapid at every meal time it ranges now from 10 to 16 units depending on what she eats.
thanks p.xx
