upset in clinic today

Hi all went to my diabetes clinic today feeling very happy.Couldnt believe doctor he said"it seems i am wasting my time and yours with these results.I thought he was joking ive never felt better.i thought my blood sugars were ok.I have been attending this hospital for over 39 years never missed an appointment never been brought in for any hypos etc.I have only seen this doctor the last 3 times and each time he has said not very nice things.My blood pressure was checked and this was normal my colestral was 4.2 okay my bis were down from 8.0 last time to 7.4 and he said this was awful.I wouldnt mind i do everything properly.test before each meal know how much insulin ratio to my food etc.i was so upset i cried when i seen the nurse.This doctor then said if i dont get blood sugars sorted i would have to see my own gp in future!!!i was gobsmacked.last time i went he said "if you were in the country i came from you wouldnt be alive today!!i am never ill and do not bother anyone about my diabetes.Its not as if its self inflicted i got this when i was a skinny teenager not a middleaged overweight type 2 kind.he also said the novrapid i take which i try to vary between 6 to 8 units with each meal.i only have very low carbs with each meal he said that is what he only starts people newly diagnosed with!!and its very low dose and wouldnt do anyone any good!!!!has this happened to anyone else i coudnt believe what he was saying.He said he cant see anyone having a high of 17 then dropping to a 3.Well i do have this happen every so often but i sort it myself.i mean i wouldnt bother going to the clinic but i thought we all go to see how we are.My notes were lost at this hospital over 3 years ago now and i have done everyhting to trace them got in touch with all kinds of people and still they have not been found.i was thinking when i got home if this doctor had a different persons notes in front of him like a druggie or alcoholic.Anyway ive written to the chief executive of hospital telling him about this doctor and how i was talked to to see what can be done.I wouldnt mind i dont smoke hardly drink and keep to my diet and insulin.He also went mad when i said i would not to simvastatin.When i asked last time if i could change from lantus he said there was nothing wrong with lantus and after him saying i was wasting his time changed me to levemir which i started yesterday.has this happened to anyone else.By the way my hospital is in liverpool.every other doctor i used to see were lovely and always praised me for doing so well having had this condition for so long.He has asked nurse to see what my blood sugars are in the next fortnight and if no change will tell me to see my own doctor.Surely he cannot stop me attending my diabetes clinic my own doctor does not know anything about diabetes.Has anyone any suggestions what i should do i am so upset
 
goodness me, he sounds like a right gem of a Doctor! you did well to just cry, I think I would have wailed if he'd said those things to me :? I actually think 6-8 novorapid with a low carb meal is pretty high?! Am I understanding this correctly, did he say that 6-8 was too low? Do you have a ratio you use with your dosage?

Also, I have met with a Doc at my 6 month review and he had the wrong notes. so it's possible :roll:

I agree with debloubed, the Dr sounds like a right nasty type, he deserves to be reported for the way he treated you. Let's hope your complaint has the desired effect and you are treated with respect the next time you visit the clinic. These people need to be put in their place. Preferably out of a job ! :twisted:

I presume the Bg reading of 8 down to 7.4 was your HbA1c levels. Surely any improvement should have been praised, not complained about. Let us know how you get on.
 
hi debloubed yes this doctor said 6 to 8 units of novorapid was too low.I think hes is very cheeky because that is what my carbs are with each meal i usually have approx 60gms of carbs.For breakfast i inject 4 units cos i only ever have 2 weetabix or shredded wheat or other cereal which will contain 40 gms of carbs.For lunch its usually a sandwich and fruit or yoghurt which is approx 60gms carbs.anyway im not letting this go and will let you know what happens ta for now
 
Oh My God, I am so shocked. That is shameful, I am not surprised you are upset-he had no right to talk to you the way he did. Agree with Debloubed, 6-8 is more than I would have taken of a rapid-acting even for a high carb meal. This doctor doesn't sound fit to practice, a complaint about his conduct is completely warranted. I'm sure you won't be alone in making a complaint about this plonker and he should not be allowed to get away with it.
Trouble is, some doctors read a text book, and think they know it all, they have no idea of the reality of living with diabetes, and a lot don't even seem to know the difference between type-1 or type-2! That's my experience anyway, and I was also diagnosed as a skinny teenager.
I've read another posting tonight on diabetes soapbox, called 'can anybody help me', which tells of another forum member' dreadful experience with unsympathetic doctors.
It's wearing and emotionally exhausting having to deal with situations like you've had today, as is having to complain about them.:evil:
Give yourself a big hug from all of us,and congratulate yourself for not giving him a dose of your insulin.

Hi Cugila thanks for your reply.I was also thinking surely he cannot stop me from attending diabetes clinic because he thinks my blood sugars are not controlled.I do not want to see him again anyway and will be asking to see another doctor.Will let you know how i get on

good for you on complaining, maybe he was trained in his country and they do it different but that doesnt give him any right to talk to u like this :evil:
any lowering of hba1c is good and should be praised, as for novorapid ive never injected that much in one dose since becoming diabetic ,i never go higher than 3 units, type 2 usually need a lot more insulin so maybe hes rubbish at type 1, he cant stop you being seen at the hospital as youve done nothing wrong,
well done on lowering your hba1c, let us know how u get on
 

Hi ya, this sounds very similar to my ratios of 1 unit of Novorapid to 10 g of carbs so can't see you are doing anything wrong, unless your ratio is incorrect? but even then, it wouldn't up your dosage by much....looking in my little book of all things Carb, 30g of weetabix is 20.3g carbs (is 30g x2 weetabix perhaps?) so if you factor in the milk and your ratio calculation is correct, then 4 units is maybe even a little too much?! Don't quote me though as this is just how I calculate based on what I have been taught
 
Complain about him, vehemently. Alternatively point out to him in this country, you are alive and you have every right to the same treatment as everyone else.
 
well done!!!! no-one especially a doc has the right to make you feel like that hope he gets what he deserves diabetes is hard enough without the prospect of being treated by mr magoo
 
Agree with lionrampant - that is worthy of a complaint

Also, its not his call only whether you attend clinic or not. Its bad enough to not feel listened to (as if often the case for us all) but to be actively chastised. Problem is you prob know as much about it as him and to make you feel guilty for being alive, when others die is nothing short of scandalous.

Have a look at the National Framework for diabetes - partnership is the key, and im sure T1's have a right to the specialist help. Please dont be afraid to refuse to see him again

Whilst I agree that in this case the doctor has behaved inexcusably, it is my experience of fellow diabetics, that most of them don't actually listen or take action, and I can see where his attitude might have incubated.

I attended a carb counting course with someone who refused to keep sugars below double figures because he didn't want a hypo. I met someone else who "just injects 20 units if I want a box of chocolates".

That doesn't excuse this case, or in fact this Dr. at all, and I would encourage a complaint also.

Your post made me think about something another type-1 said to me recently. It was referring to 'modern' synthetic insulins. How docs think they can make our lives' more like that of a 'normal' person. We can eat when we want ,as the insulin acts so rapidly; or the long-acting apparently has a completely flat profile. What we,and medics need to remember is that we are people with diabetes, and while we strive for the same bs control as non-diabetics, the cost of being on insulin comes at a price. If we were to inject 20 units and indulge in a box of chocs, we know the cost would be the 'high' and then the inevitable 'low'. Easy to see how patients could be misled when we are constantly told by dietitions that our diet should revolve around carbs, carbs and more carbs; take your injection so you can eat your carbs.
Whatever that docs's assumptions about other diabetics not looking after themselves, you're so right-it's no excuse for that doctor treating Sugarybibs the way he did.
We are individuals with diabetes,not diabetics and one size does not fit all.

Good grief. Last time I had a Dr talk to me like that I walked out and demanded to see another Dr citing zero confidence in his ability to safely and appropriately treat me.
Ok it wasnt for diabetes but it was for a long running thyroid condition and he had just explained something called block replacement therapy. I would have been a terrible candidate for about a dozen reasons not least of which was that my anti thyroid drugs had already knocked my liver out of balance.

Needless to say these days I treat Dr's like any over tradesman and they have to earn my trust and I challenge them on everything so that they have to explain and justify their decisions. This has led to some friction but the end result has been that I refuse to see those Dr's that wont work with me.

The thing I have learned very quickly since being diagnosed in April is that it is a medical team. The Dr is one small part and needs to pay attention like the rest of us. I think this arogant prat needs putting in his place since you cannot talk to someone like that especially when you are making progress.

Let us know how you get on the and ask to see someone else next time

That is not the way to treat anyone. You would think the doctor was having a hypo himself the rubbish he came away with.

It can be hard to put this sort of personal criticism out of your head but it really is just a lot of **** ranting and is not worthy of your attention.
 
Thanks everyone at least you all make me feel better.Anyway i wrote to chief executive of my hospital got a phone call next day and they are dealing with it and i told them i am not seeing that doctor again.I was told it takes up to 25 days befor i will hear from them.I should have done what Andys said and walked out then but i think i was in shock.
 
Hi All thanks for all the replys.Chief executive of hospital got in touch with me and said she had spoke to this doctor.He had the cheek to say "why didnt i say something to him in clinic"how could anyone if they were so upset and he didnt even say a word when i went out of room not even goodbye after i said it.Anyway she asked if i wanted to see him again?i replied i certainly would not. imagine i would not even be able to look at him never mind speak to him.If i could go back to that appoinment that day i would definatley had a go at him.I will in the future if any other doctor speaks to me like that.This doctor must have got a shock when they had a meeting with him because he tried to twist everything he had said to me and apologised.I would love to know if any other patients have seen him and been treated the same way.I have another appoinment soon but with another doctor, but i am still fuming and am not letting this go. :evil:
 
You should put a formal complaint in to the hospital administrator. You can find how to do it from their website. Write everything down as well as the name of the nurse who saw you crying. Send it ASAP. He SHOULD NOT behave like this and anyway it's a load of rubbish. Your HbA1c may be a little higher than is desirable, but it's coming down( congratulations by the way) and I bet over half the clinic's patients are higher.
My husband recently complained about something at our hospital( not the diabetes clinic) and you should have seen how fast things got put right.
