Hubby is type 2, diet-controlled only, no meds. Well controlled and good numbers. Tues he had an accident with his bike (Suzukli Bandit, very heavy) - and it fell over trapping his leg. His knee was badly swollen yesterday and massively bruised. Gone down slightly today but he can still only hobble around the house. But what is worrying me is that today he's been hungry and asking for something to eat every couple of hours. It's really not like him and I'm wondering if this might point to something going on with the knee - like infection? Anybody got any thoughts on how BG works with trauma?

blood glucose can get high from that kind of servere injury, and make one hungry also...A few days of eating a lot doen´t matter... you could give him a lot of cheese or nuts or avocadoes if it needs to be low carb..

of cause see a doctor if he gets fever or complain of a worsening of the knee if it gets warmer locally , actually I think he need an ex-ray photo taken to see if something needs operated in the knee... it is a serious place to injure

Do you have a monitor to test his blood?

When I injured my knee 3 times I had the munchies for 6 days and I was thinking he could have done more damage than anyone may think as mine I broke twice and dislocated it and the first one I didn't know about for a few days and the adrenaline going through my body and the same for the dislocation but the second one I knew that I had so he may have damaged a ligament or tweeked any of the muscles around it and the food part is because of him not moving around and being busy

His meter was dead but we just found the spare. His reading is 10.2 and he's about ready to have a heart attack now lol, he is usually in the 6s!! What should he do - eat or starve himself?

It will be the injury and possible infection causing these high readings, and also the reason for his hunger. Let him snack on low carb foods such as eggs or cheese, and prepare his normal meals at the normal times. There is little he can do until his injury improves. Just keep everything very low carb, and make sure he drinks loads of water. Hydration helps and is important. He must also keep checking his levels to make sure they don't go up much more. If they do - more water. If they go to extremely high (high 20s) levels - it is time for an emergency doctor. Hopefully they will start to drop again.

Hi not too worry you but he needs to go and get it checked preferably in a and e just in case he's done more damage then it looks that way they can give him antibiotics to stop any infection before it starts any injury like this should be investigated especially as he's diabetic and more prone to complications please let us know what happens and all the best hope all goes well.

We should have thought of this - so stupid. He's just never been ill or hurt himself since he was diagnosed in 2009, so it never occured to us. Live and learn eh? Thanks so much for all help xx

Now he's fussing because his ankles are swollen, he hasn't had this before. Is this caused by the knee as well? I hope we don't need to go to A&E at a weekend..

Freema he's being stubborn and just saying no. If it gets worse or does anything dramatic then I'll make him go.
No2D that's great ty, if he knows the BG might be up for a bit then he might stop fussing. Told him about the hot/cold treatment. But to be honest, this morning he's walking around a lot more easily. TY everybody!
