I do not have diabetes
Hi peeps,
I was hoping you could give me some advice. a very close friend of mine has been showing signs of diabetes for months ( i am very familiar with these due to family history), she is; constantly thirsty, constantly urinating at least 20 times during our day at University, lack of concentration, blurred vision, dry mouth, fatigue, numbness in hands and feet, dizziness to name a few. We advised her to see doc immediately to get checked. doc advised her to test her blood. i gave her a blood monitor kit and told her to test when she gets up and before meals to which her readings are between 6.5 - 7.9 , and at least 2 hrs after meal to which her readings are 8.2 - 9.5. the doc has told her to do this for a month and go back. but we are concerned that her symptoms are getting worse e.g her concentration and her ability to function in uni, but especially her loss of sensation in her hands and feet. she has been doing her bloods for 2 weeks now and we feel she should go back asap. or do any of you with your experience think she should wait? any advice greatly appreciated xx

Agree, she should go back asap or go to A & E as this doesn't sound right at all.

thats exactly what we have told her today. just doesnt seem right for someone with these readings to wait a month. her dr is being a bit obstructive as she advised him we told her to get checked out and she said he didnt appreciate 1st yr student nurses diagnosing his patient. we were quite shocked by his reaction, as we are not trying to tell him how to do his job as we are still very new in our training, but we were concerned friend and as myself having alot of experience with diabetes and i can see my friend suffering and just feel she needs this sorting sooner rather than later xx

Regardless of what is causing the symptoms it's ridiculous to wait a month longer to address them. She needs to go to a different doctor STAT! And it doesn't take a month of testing to rule out or diagnose diabetes.

ty peeps for your advice. we thought a month was way too long. will insist she go back asap and definately to different doctor x

Good on you for looking after your friend .... and yep, a month is ludicruous

Hi. I'm afraid there is a bit of a 'tradition' amongst some GPs that you wait up to 3 months having been given diet advice once diabetes is diagnosed; this happened to me. This is wrong but there you go. If the blood sugar readings remain below around 10 two hours after a meal for your friend then obviously diabetes is possible but not in itself in a dangerous state. It's possible there are additional reasons for the symptoms? Do get another opinion if you can as this GP was wrong in his reaction. Is your friend overweight or normal? If overweight then a low-carb diet is necessary if not already on it and if normal BMI then LADA becomes a possible diagnosis once confirmed. If the blood sugar keeps going up then A&E may be needed.
