Hello All,
I am type 1 since two years and take novorapid and levemir regularly.
Since one week I had many hypos, i lowered my insulin dose alot. But since last night i have stopped taking insulin at all.
Its unbelievable that my levels are normal without taking the levemir at night or novorapid during day.
But i have also read that it can be dangerous to stop taking inuslin like this.
Please guide me whats going on with me? Should i stop taking insulin?

Sounds highly unusual to me, but even though I've had Type 1 for 38 years, I don't know everything.

As long as your blood sugars are within target, you can remain off insulin, but if you go high at any point, you still need treatment.

Contact your DSN and she'll be able to advise you.

@dancer is right, keep an eye on your BG in case it starts creeping up; or ramps up suddenly. If the latter, you may run the risk of DKA if you don't have enough insulin on-board. As suggested, I'm sure your DSN and Dr would like to schedule a visit with regards to your current situation.

I see from an old post of yours that you have been on a really low basal dosage since diagnosis (6-12u)?

Can I ask how much you weigh and how old you are please? Also what you're currently eating without the need for bolus insulin? And if known, what your typical I:C (insulin:carbohydrate) ratio is?

Regards,
Grant

@GrantGam1337 thank you for the reply.

My weight is 62 kg and 30 yr old. I had some bread in morning and i checked later my level was like 150.
But then after 3 hours my level was around 100. I usualy take 7 units of novorapid for means with carbohydrates.
I think my ratio is 1:50.

I suppose your light weight could explain your low basal requirements. Especially if you're low carbing and very active.

Some bread as in a couple of slices? 150mg/dL (8.3mmol/L) is barely even a spike in my book, and back to 100mg/dL (5.6mmol/L) with no insulin is bizarre.

I'm obviously no doctor but 1:50 I:C is really quite low, it would suggest that you have extreme insulin sensitivity or have a pretty well functioning pancreas for a diabetic.

Are you aware if you had any GAD or C-peptide tests when you were diagnosed as a T1D?

Cheers,
Grant

If you stopped taking levemir last night, you probably do still have some insulin in your system.

Do you have a means of testing for ketones? Are you familiar with your correction doses?

Keep regularly checking blood sugar and ketones. If they go up (particularly if you have ketones) you will need to treat with insulin.

Have a chat with your DSN for advice.

Have you been up to anything unusual in the last week? Extra activity, medications? Could you be pregnant? Are you coming down with anything?

If you are only a year diagnosed it could be honeymooning - have you had a cpeptide test?

@catapillar, not being picky but it's been two years since diagnosis. Only mentioning this because it makes it all the stranger...

Not picking faults, promise:)

well health wise im not in a good shape. I have stomach problems all the times. I recently started having panic attacks and started taking "Tavor" for it. First i thought its bcoz of stomach that my glucose levels are so stable. But as i tested it last night, seems like its not related to stomach. Is there any other way that glucose can come down without insulin? like some other illness?

@catapillar thanks for your reply. But my physical activity is actually lower then usual. I stayed at home all day without any physical work. I just have added stress. I cannot get pregnant since im a male :) . Not sure about peptide test or correction doses.

@technochill If it was me, I'd be phoning my DSN for advice. Some people here are on tiny doses of insulin but they still need those tiny amounts else they would become ill.

I wonder if the meds you're on are affecting your blood sugar?

As @catapillar says, you would still have some Levemir in your system.

Do get some medical advice to make sure you're ok, and do keep checking your blood sugar.

If it were me I would be asking for a cortisol test to see if you have developed Addison's disease, Do you have problems with low blood pressure as well?

@CarbsRok thank you for response. I havent checked my blood pressure but i do have extreme headache and feel dizzy from time to time. I will ask my doctor for Addisons disease test.

Ah, well that would certainly count as very unusual! Sorry! And sorry, as @GrantGam1337 highlights, I see I misread your post and you are 2 years diagnosed. However, there's no standard period for honeymooning - a cpeptide test will tell you if you are making any of your own insulin.

If you are very stressed (to the point of having panic attacks) and on new medication, this could be effecting your insulin requirements. Not really sure how though (only because stress usually sends me up, but it could do the opposite for you) so I would definitely be seeking input from your DSN and/or the doctor who prescribed the new med.

I asked about correction doses (so how much does 1unit bring tour blood sugar down by) because it is all well and good saying check your blood sugar and ketones, but knowing more about correction doses would help you know what to do if the checks show they are starting to rise suddenly. So do ask your DSN about that as well.

If you have started to feel stressed and becoming very jittery where as before you were not and have tummy issues where you didn't before then I would suspect you could have low cortisol levels. This can be very dangerous in fact life threatening so please see your doctor ASP and do tell him that you have stopped your insulin plus all your other symptoms. Not many GP's have come across Addison's disease so actually mention it to him/her so the ball can start to roll.

@CarbsRok thanks alot irs really helpful God bless u. i will get my cortisol checked. I am extremely heart broken these days because my sister is also diabetic and she was divorced just because that she is diabetic. :(
