Type 2 URGENT PLEASE HELP: sweet taste & ketones canaglifozin

hiya,

Can someone please advise?

I started canagliflozin 300mg on Sunday and that evening had a sweet taste in my mouth. I ordered some ketone urine sticks so I could put my mind at rest as ketoacidocis is a worry of mine.

Today I have the sweet taste again, so I used a stick - it reads between +15 and +40 for ketones. I have no other symptoms.

I’ve called 111 and they are calling back but I’m fretting.....
 
You did the proper thing in ringing the NHS Advice line, they will get you sorted. All you can do now is wait for the call back but if you start to feel ill then ring them again. Fingers crossed for you, best wishes.

They’ve not rung me back yet (despite saying it’d be within 30 mins) but I’ve pee’d on another ketone stick and it’s lower now def +15 rather than the previous darker colour that indicated +40.

@ShabbyChicSarah88 - whilst pee sticks are helpful for assessing ketones, they're not very accurate. Blood test strips, from finger prick tests are much more reliable.

Have you heard from 111 yet?

Yes!! Just spoke to the doctor, she got me to do the ketone urine test again and it was a bit lower (between +5 and +15) - she said not to worry and call the diabetic nurse in the morning.

After doing research this evening I shan’t be continuing with the canagliflozin - too risky I think. Will speak to nurse about alternatives.

I'm glad you are reassured.

Via-a-vis the Canagliflozin, lots of folks do very well on it, but, as you have discovered, there can be some bumps in the road, for a small percantage, along the way. If you don't feel safe and comfortable on it, the chat is definitely the way to go.

Bearing in mind there are over 400 combinations or drugs available to treat T2 diabetes (and that doesn't include insulin), I'm sure there are alternatives out there worth trying.
