Hi

I think I have had a urine infection for about a week now I saw my gp last week and she done a urine test, but it read normal so she never gave me anything for it. My bg levels have been up and down and had some ketones one day last week. I have had abdominal pain on and off and kept being woken up with the urge to urinate. When I was in hospital a few months ago I had an ultrasound scan on my kidneys and bladder although my kidneys were fine they found out that my bladder retains some urine after I have gone to the toilet. However nothing was done about this ie no further investigation or treatment. The thing is it seems to be getting worse and I was wondering if I should go to the hospital and get checked out there. I have had uti in the past but not like this. Has anyone else experienced this or any advice would be great.

Thanks.

I'm not T1 but I have lots of experience with UTIs :( If some urine is left behind in your bladder that increases the chance of infection. Did you see a urologist? If not, ask to see one, to find out what your options are. I think there are treatments for this. Abdominal pain and increased urinary urgency are things where it's probably better safe than sorry, ie best to get checked out. A dipstick urine test will show if there is a vigorous infection going on, but the only really accurate kind of test for a UTI is a urine culture, which takes several days to get a result on. I would also increase my water intake if I were you. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

When I got my urine infection pre-diagnosis I found out in hospital months later at diagnosis that they'd never tested my urine sample so things can obviously go wrong with the urine tests. I think this does sound like a urine infection to me, you should definitely get another test done and ask to see a urologist. I hope everything you get better soon :)

Thanks for your advice. Well woke up today and have ketones of 5.8. If thats not telling me something then I'm stupid looks like I will be making a trip to the hospital.

Yes, I read the other day on the website this forum is on that ketones of 3.7 requires immediate medical care. :( Feel better soon!

It's when it's 3 or above that you need to go to the hospital.

I hope you get better soon Carol-Anne.

You're right, thanks for that. I just checked the page I had read the other day - a poster had a level of 3.7 and was umming and ahhing about going to hospital, so I posted the guideline levels from the page. That must be where I got the 3.7 from.

Ahh fair enough, I just wanted to stop any confusion as DKA really isn't fun.

Well I'm home from the hospital its confirmed I have a small urine infection but the scan also showed that I have a cyst on my ovary which explains the pain. So back for a check up in 3 months if I don't get anymore pain.

I'm type 2, male but have had my fair share of UTI's. I have kidney disease too. I ordered Multistix off of Amazon. You get 100 in a bottle. These are the same as what your GP uses to test your urine for infection. They test for leukocytes (infection), blood, pH, specific gravity, ketones and loads more. Saves me visiting the GP if the test shows negative. Worth investing in. Get well soon!

Ketones in a blood sample above 1.5 mmol/l are an emergency. Even though I am Type 2 I inject insulin and have a blood ketone meter and test when BGs are above 13.5 mmol/l.

Yeah the other day I was responding to someone in a thread who had a blood ketone level of 3.7 and she was reluctant to go to the hospital because she said she didn't like it there! Cause for concern, I think. She didn't come back, so I hope she is ok.

Glad you are on the mend and you have a better idea of what is going on. If you have bad period pain or heavy periods I would ask them if there is a chance you could have endometriosis. In my case, doctors missed the diagnosis for 10 long years. I had an ovarian cyst too, which was related to the endometriosis. It's also possible to have cysts without endometriosis. Good luck.

Glad they know what the problem is, hope everything will be fine for you in three months.
