Urine test ?

A quick question - Hubby has now made his appointment for his first HbA1C test since diagnosis back in June. He has been asked to bring in a urine sample.

Anyone know why ?

His urine wasn't tested previously-just wondered what they are looking for...

If it's anything like my appointments, the request for a urine sample is on every letter.

I've never taken it since the first time, as it wasn't asked for then or on any appointment since.
 
They'll do a dip test, to check if glucose is present most likely - pretty routine in my experience.
 
Probably to check creatine levels for kidney function.

That's what came after my last urine test.
 
The urine test is looking for breakdown products etc in the urine i.e. kidney damage thru having the diabetes. Mine is tested at most diabetes appointments. Good to have it checked.
 
Urine test is a pretty standard part of diabetes reviews
It is largely looking for signs of microalbuminuria / proteinuria ( protein in the urine) which can be picked up with a dipstick and is one way of screening for any early signs of kidney damage.
Elevated BS can, in some people, over time lead to the blood filtration system in the kidneys becoming less efficient and start to 'leak' small amounts of protein.
A positive result does not necessarily indicate kidney disease as small amounts of blood in the urine ( which could be from UTI etc etc ) would also cause a positive protein result - a positive result just indicates a need to retest / investigate a bit further.
If the urine sample is sent to the labs, then they can carry out other more detailed tests
 
I have never been asked to take in a urine sample when I have my check ups
 
thanks everyone for your replies. Hubby had blood tests to check for kidney function and everything was clear/normal which is why I wondered why they had asked. Knowing our surgery it's probably just another 'box' they haven't ticked....

he isn't worried, we were just curious
 

This is a urine test, not a blood test. They need to know what the kidneys are flushing out into the urine as well as the blood. It is routine. I get one every year.
 
The one time I actually took in a urine sample as requested it was treated with disdain and discarded untested so no longer bother.
 
Currently I have a review every 6 months. At the main one with my DN she sends the urine sample off to the lab for formal analysis of creatinine and albumin. At the interim one I only see the health care assistant. She does a dip test for glucose, protein and blood, then throws the sample away.
