Hi everyone

5 years ago I was put on 2.5mg of ramipril daily, being told that all diabetics were being recommended to take it. I am still taking it, but am puzzling why as I never had high blood pressure, infact it was pretty low. Has anybody been on these tablets for a longer period of time, perhaps 10 years? Have they actually been proven to help diabetics? After having been so ill from taking Simvastatin which I was told to take because I am diabetic, I am now questioning the reasoning behind the ramipril.....has it really been proven to help diabetics?

Many thanks
Sha

Hello Sha,

I take ramipril, not for bp but because of diabetic retinopathy over some years now. My bp was fine, but diabetics who have had eye problems before are advised to keep their bp lower than normal. I was talking to a consultant at my infirmary a few years back, he was type 1 and on ramipril for bp, he said that it was a good drug to take for diabetics, as not only did it lower bp, but also help protected the kidneys from the long-term damage of diabetes. I have also read this elsewhere, but can't recall where it was.

Next time you are at your doctors, or on your next diabetes review, ask why you are on this drug, I am sure they won't mind you asking, or alternatively google it.

Regards

Nigel
