I've just received a letter from my local hospital for an appointment for an ultrasound scan on my liver. The letter states " no food or drink six hours before scan, only water if needed BUT if your diabetic and need to eat, you can only have toast with JAM/MARMALADE/MARMITE or such like and no fats or dairy products"! Makes me wonder what planet their on, bread, jam & marmalade if your diabetic, I don't eat any of that so I guess I'll wait till after scan (luckily it's early) before eating and taking tablets.

hehe, i have an ultrasound tomorrow at 3pm for my stones, they told me to drink but didnt say anything about eating, i think now ive read this ill avoid food as well just in case it matters to my scan, thanks

I'd imagine you would have to be very careful with what you eat leading up to the scan (depending what they are looking for) and this will be why they are advising you to fast and avoid fats/diary products beforehand. Six hours isn't long and normally you have to fast for 10-12 hours before a full-lipid breakdown of cholesterol.

I had this exact scan at exactly this time last year! I got this letter too and phoned them for advice re the jam thing, she said that I could have anything at all I usually eat as long as there was absolutely no fat or dairy or protein, I had some dry fried stirfry veg and a slice of dry burgen, I eat that anyway. But she said it wasn't compulsory to eat only if I felt I needed to. My appointment was in the afternoon so felt the need to eat something, also if I go to long I get a liver dump and higher numbers anyway so for me eating was the better option, In the big scheme of things slightly higher numbers for a couple of hours -does it really matter? black tea and coffee is also fine, take a snack to eat afterwards.

Good luck with your scan:)

Thank you lovinglife. My appointment is at 9.15, so not too bad to skip breakfast for once and have something when I get back. I usually have weetabix with a dash of milk for breakfast so that is a definite no no for that morning before scan.
