Hi,
Is anyone using Animal Insulin in a Pump ?
After experiencing a severe allergy to Humalog when I first started Pumping.
I am now experiencing similar problems with NovoRapid (which I have used for 10 years).
I am considering trying Animal insulin with my pump.
It's the last Insulin I didn't have a problem with.
Thanks,
janette

Hi Janette,
yes I use animal insulin in my pump. No problems at all.
You just have to bolus 30 mins before you eat and any changes for basal make 2 hours before needed. Do remember though that duration of insulin is longer than the analogues :)

Hi CarbsRok,
Thanks for that info.
Are you using Porcine or Bovine Animal Insulin ?
How do you plan exercise ?
Since it will be harder to adjust longer activity for exercise ...
I wondered about adjusting (reducing)bolus' to account for exercise.
Or would it be better to set up an extra set of basal rates for exercise (swapping over on the day) ?
It's all going to take more planning isn't it ?
Any thoughts....

I use bovine, but the profile is the same as porcine.
I have 2 basal patterns a normal day and a lazey day basal :)
Any unplaned exercise then the easiest thing to do is have a snack.
Reduction for planned exercise is to reduce at least 2 hours before hand as this isn't always possible, ie the sheep have done a runner then I just make sure I have some jelly beans in my pocket and a couple of these wards off any problems.

Yes it will take some planning and thought but can be done. I suspect it will be just like starting on the pump again from day one.
The basal pattern you have now will give you a rough idea where to start though.

hi I used hypurin porcine with the pump for 6 months but have now changed to apidra as I found that the pump wasn't doing half of what it should. was taking to long to adjust if sugars went up. swore I would never use anything other than the pork but love life with the apidra, took a lot of persuading for doctors to agree to me having the pump with porcine - I was the first in the south west they said. worked well so hopefully will do for others.
