I ended up going to the ER today, and am on antibiotics. How long before the shakes and feeling awful goes away. I am type 2 and on insulin (long acting) twice a day 20 in the morning and 11 at night. Previous symptoms were a couple of crashes of under 60 sugar numbers. I feel terrible and pretty scared.

Hi There!!

Poor you! :( sounds horrible what you're going through right now!
My doctor told me that Antibiotics can take about 24-48 hours to get into your system but I'm not sure how correct that is and I guess it also depends on what Antibiotics, strength and dosage you're taking.
I'm 'Bumping' your post up in the hope that someone with more knowledge will see it and give you a better answer than I can.

Take care

Paul

Thank you Paul. I napped a bit during the night, and am feeling a little bit better this morning. Still a bit shaky internally, but not quite as bad. I am hoping the antibiotics start working soon. I am keeping my little electric heater blasting to keep me warm.

Glad your feeling a bit better this morning! Hopefully another 24hours and that nasty cold and shivering feeling will have gone altogether.

Aww bless you - i used to get these all the time so know how you feel! I normally start feeling a little better within a few hours of taking the first tablet. I was told to always take paracetemol or ibrupofen for the pain and 'achy' feeling and not worry about not eating if I had no appetite but just make sure to drink loads.
Hope you feel better soon :D

It's been a week now, and was feeling better every day until today. I took the last antibiotic yesterday, and today am havimg tingly feelings in my scalp. I did see a doctor last monday, and she said I may have to have more than one round of anitbtioics to get all better. I go in Monday for a total exam. I am wintering down south, so did not have a regular doctor, so making do with the locals.

Hi, I've suffered with UTIs for years so I know how painful and bothersome they are. If you feel unwell, don't hesitate to go to the ER, even if it's close to your Monday doctor's appointment.

If it doesn't resolve fully within a few more days, I think you should ask for a referral to a urologist for tests. Any UTI is potentially a risk factor for more serious problems, esp. when you have diabetes.

I have found that taking a daily Cranberry supplement helps keep my bladder healthy and comfortable. Also suggest you keep taking paracetamol every 4-6 hours and drink plenty of water until the infection and symptoms are gone. An ice pack between the legs can really help with the pain. Or a heat pack on your lower abdomen or back.

It's not unusual to need a different antibiotic for a UTI, nor is it unusual for the symptoms to be caused by a yeast infection or another condition, such as irritable bladder syndrome or something to do with glucose. Yeast and bacteria thrive on urine that is slightly sugary. Keep a close eye on your BG levels. Antibiotics can lead to yeast infections - which can easily travel to the outer urethra and cause irritation.
