Does anyone know if the hand held monitors for testing and the strips needed are zero rated, or can a diabetic claim the vat back?

Yes they should both be VAT exempt for diabetics. The above form is usually accepted at chemists, but some see it as a "bit of a nuisance" to process. Have you asked your duabetes specialist or nurse? Many meter companies give out their meters free to the diabetes clinics to help their own test strips get sold by the chemists. Strips should be free on a GP's prescription in the UK but this is definitely a postcode lottery. Some GP's will not issue them on prescription even though they are required to under the NHS guidelines.

Rang a local supermarket this morning and asked about o% on diabetic goods, the reply i got stated " why should you get it, i dont" needless to say i put them right, but when i rang lloyds chemist, i got the chemist who talked me through the range of meters, and told me i can buy one at 0% vat. This afternoon i went to see my diabetic nurse, who gave me & demonstated a Bayer Contour meter. Thumbs up to NELC PCT. I also get my "bits" free even though im only t2 diet controlled.
