Hi Longain,
I'm not a vegetarian but we do have members who are, someone will answer you soon.

Hiya Tia,

I'm a T2 as of 2.5 months ago

I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian as of 22 years ago

I'm currently using a reduced carbohydrate diet to keep my blood sugar under tighter control

If you have any questions - please do ask and if there's anything I can do, just let me know :)

There are another couple of veggies here, I think ChocFish is veggie too and also some meat reducers ...

I'm not actually sure I understood your post though - would I recommend what? Being vegetarian? Definitely yes ... being diabetic? best avoided!!!!

All the best and do feel free to ask :)

I was veggie for 7 years but after I had my son I started eating chicken and the occasional hot dog  I'm not actually diabetic but my gran was and my mum is type 2 and I did have a high result on one of those fingerprick tests they do in Superdrug (over 8 - not sure if this makes me pre-diabetic or not :?: ). That spurred me into action and now I've lost over a stone in weight due to me reducing carbs and upping my exercise level.

Whilst i'm not vegetarion, I do love vegetarian food in a big way - cant see it doing me any harm, probably a whole more good than what i've been eating for years and years anyway !!

I could quite happily sit there and eat a plate of veggies for my Lunch or Dinner, and have no objection to eating quorn either :D
I've cut down on my meat intake recently, for no other reason that i'm enjoying a whole new love affair with carrots and parsnips (sad I know, i'm easily pleased)

Meat and fatty meat aren't really the problem when it comes to lowering your blood sugar ...

Personally speaking I have found adopting a lower-carb diet has helped me to keep greater control of my blood sugars and vegetarian food is not traditionally low in carbs!

However, it is VERY achievable to keep vegetarian and lower your carb intake.

But if you're not vegetarian already (aside from saving a few animals!) you probably won't find a massive benefit to going vegetarian.

It is my choice to be vegetarian for various reasons, mainly ethical and I wish that everyone would go veggie but I know there's zero chance of that so I don't do the whole sopbox standing shouting thing :)

All the best, J/x

carrots and parsnips, ouch, nearly as bad as bread and potatoes. have ya checked your readings after eating them.

There are many vegetarian diabetics, some with good control, others terrible. The diet has the potential to be effective but a vegetarian diet comes in many guises. Pulses have a low glycemic index and many find a gi diet effective. Soy and other vegetable proteins may produce less stress on the kidneys than animal proteins. In addition, nuts (eg, almonds), soluble fibre from oats and barley, soy proteins, may help reduce lipids.
There are some low GI vegetarian cookbooks, though I don't know of one aimed specifically at diabetes see the glycemic institute website for details.
Vegan diabetics have their own guru in the shape of Dr Neil Barnard. He has published a paper in Diabetes Care showing some sucess with his diet (Low gi vegan) and like all Gurus the book of the diet.
