My Hba1c at the end of November 18 was 49. It was a wake up call for me. I had been taking 500mg of Metformin, morning and night for nearly two years. Fell off the wagon big time !!! However now totally back on track, following the Lo carb diet. Have lost 7kg since November. I walk between 4-5 km per day and attend a gym 4 times a week. (resistance machines)
My confusion is...... My fasting morning reading is around 6.2. However if I forget to take my Metformin at night the reading is always lower (around 5.7). Through the day I test 2hrs before and after meals and it sits around 6.
Should I still be taking the Metformin ??? Is it safe to say come off it and continue my lifestyle changes. Not getting a lot of support from my Dr and nurse. "Just keep taking the pills" !!!! However with these readings am I correct in thinking that I can achieve the change without taking medication.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Being doing Type 2 for thirty years through many different medical approaches. My advice - give it a go for a week testing testing testing. Note every change to what you do. Analyse your data. You'll soon know if it’s working or not and what if any changes you need to make. It’s your life and you are in charge of this. HBA1C if 49 means zilch to me because in Oz we measure in mmol. I assume it’s really good.

49 is just enough to be officially diabetic.

My first 1c was 47 so the highest pre.diabetic figure.

I agree with the above, give it a try. Diet and exercise got my 1c down to 31 very fast. Just remember to test.

Thanks, the 49 is mmol , as we use the same units in NZ. Will do the readings for a couple of weeks. Next blood test is end of February

Just bear in mind that Metformin is a drug that accumulates in the body, so when stopped the residue will still be effective for some time. If you are going to experiment by stopping it you need to monitor for longer than a week, in my opinion. Along the same lines, forgetting to take the odd one won't (or shouldn't) have any effect on your blood glucose.
