The letter I received from my first GP after initial blood tests said "...your recent blood test confirms you have developed very early diabetes." To cut a longish story short I was subsequently sent on a short local course for people with T2 (it largely focused on the standard NHS healthy eating plate!) and I was prescribed gliclazide. My HbA1c at diagnosis 12 months ago was 102 and in July has fallen to 52. Hopefully when next tested in around February 2017 it will have dropped lower, as recently with a LCHF diet my own BG tests have shown a marked reduction.

My question is, is "Very Early Diabetes" a specific condition and if so what are the criteria for diagnosis?

My apologies for having to ask on here, but since last December I've only met with a GP for about 10 minutes back in January and that was when when I changed to a new practice.

Sounds like they didn't want to worry you.

Complete mushroom compost I'm afraid. With an Hba1c of 102 you are Diabetic, no ifs no but. Congrats on the fab drop to 52 though, and I am sure you will be lowr from what you say, and you commitment to what you eat

There is a stage called pre-diabetes (HbA1C between 42 - 47 if I remember correctly!). As pp said any number of 48 or above is Diabetic. Well done on getting your number down to 52, that's where I am at the moment but from a lower start point (69).

I suppose the GP might have meant it was picked up early but unless you had a non diabetic baseline about 3-6 months before diagnosis I don't suppose that statement could be made in confidence either.

That is a good point.

My GP reckons he "caught" my diabetes early, but I suspect I may have had it longer.

Had you had diabetes blood checks previous to the diagnosis? If you had one say 12 months earlier that was normal, no diabetes, then maybe he is saying you became diabetic "early" rather than having had it undiagnosed for years.

Hello @miahara, another thought to throw into the pot. Perhaps your GP has the view that (usually) only older people become diabetic, and maybe meant that you, as a younger person, have "very early diabetes" . The only way you'll really know is to ask at your next checkup.

It was my first visit to a GP in years so had never had a blood test before. My guess is that I had diabetes for at least a couple of years as I'd been slowly shedding weight thought hadn't realised, as the only times I weigh myself was when weighing holiday luggage. ( Bag+me minus me = weight of case). It was a friend who we only see once a year commented to my wife - 'Has Dave lost weight?' Wife wouldn't notice as she's quite visually impaired and doesn't notice details.
Oh Salvia - How I wish I was a younger person !!!!!!

A good question, I wish I could answer it. Probably best to ask the person who wrote it because it could be interpreted in several ways. An HbA1c of 102 is clearly diabetic, hence the gliclazide I guess. Well done on getting it down to 52.
