Started DAFNE on Monday. I've been type 1 for 15 years and the amount of info I had wrong was shocking!

On Tuesday I got changed from my mixed insulin (Humulin M3) to Levemir and Humalog. I'm struggling so much to get my levels to go down and be reasonable. It's in the high teens (15-19mmol) incredibly frustrating.

Got a challenge tonight as I'm having a takeaway. When I used to be on BI & QA years ago I prob would of injected up to 20units for the meal! now I have to add and try and do it the best I can.

Just thought I'd post this to see if anyone else is in the same position and that. Thanks for reading

Hey @LucyM88 Well done on completing the course.

There can be alot of things to take in especially in one week, but it's effort that will be well rewarded in the long term, I know changing anything is unnerving, takes a while to bed in new insulin and new doses, but it's also great to do something positive that will help you so much in time. Keep testing tonight to see how you manage with your takeaway and hope you enjoy it ;)

Well there does seem to be a lot of "guesstimation" involved lol! I will weigh when I can and look things up. Just difficult when I'm at work or going out. Will be hard to enjoy myself without being worried about numbers and dosages. Hopefully it will get better as times goes by

@LucyM88, there's an app called Carbs & Cals which should come in handy for when your at work or eating out, but quite a lot of food items nowadays contain the nutritional information on the packaging. Good luck and hope your new knowledge leads to better bg control.

Give the Carbs and Cals App a spin, I find the pictures of portion sizes a real help when estimating.

What I find helps is working out all the carbs for a new meal, doing the insulin thing, test before, then one hour after, two hours after then three. Because I'm really boring I'd eat the same thing again the next night but adjusting then testing. I then get closer and closer til I've nailed it with the insulin.
Might be a bit difficult to eat the takeaway every night though. ( I wish!) But if you eat the same meal every time you order by testing you'll be able to get closer and closer to the dose.
Some of the set meals at home that I eat I don't carb count now because the same things are going on. So I know 2 units for a green salad with 1 unit an hour later for the chicken.
Do you know if your basal (background) insulin is right yet? This can have an affect too. But once that is sorted then you are bolusing for food rather than having to deal with using the bolus to correct and deal with the meal.

Well I've only just changed my insulin. Was on mixed twice a day, now I'm on Levemir twice a day and humalog for my meals. I'm not too sure if my BI is right at the moment so you are right, that will have an affect on it.
