Very Low Carbing and constipation

Hello All,

Hope we are all well.

I was wondering how us low carb-ers and very low carb-bers cope with constipation..

As I have found that the lower carb I go, then the more difficult it is to go, I do drink lots and lots of water, but I recon that its the lack of fibre in the low carb diet..

What thoughts and view do we have and are there any simple solutions that can help before constipation creates any issues down there.. lol lol.

Cheers

Try upping the amount of veg, that should help. I have a couple of bouts of constipation while on the ND and it's not nice, it makes you feel yuk. I had no alternative but to ride it out, and thankfully it did sort it's self out, but while on a food diet, the increase in veg should help.

Hi.
I use Psyllium Husks before meals. They are a great source of fibre and does the job for me.

"Psyllium is the husk of the seed of the Plantain and is a top herb used in weight control and for general intestinal health. It contains a spongy fiber that reduces appetite, improves digestion and cleanses the system, making it an excellent choice for healthy dieting. Psyllium can provide the fiber that is missing on low carbohydrate diets. Every 100 grams of psyllium provides 71 grams of soluble fiber; a similar amount of oat bran would contain only 5 grams of soluble fiber"

Available in capsules from Holland and Barrett. Not cheap but i think worth it.

I recommend brocolli!

My suggestions:

Rhubarb - a controversial topic. Some say it's low carb. Some disagree. I have stewed rhubarb with live Greek yoghurt and some flax seeds.

Slightly too much very very dark chocolate - it's naturally low carb and you don't need much. Avoid 'diabetic' chocolate.

A little Allbran - the lowest carb breakfast cereal.

If all else fails, a stiff dose of Andrews Liver Salts - otherwise known as Blasting Powder

Or you could always try Metformin  (Sorry - past my bedtime!)

Yup, Metfartin will do it every time. Mind, while on the ND I have had a couple of episodes of constipation, and as I am on Metfartin, felt quite let down, let me tell you

Chicken stir fry with oyster and spring onion sauce. You can buy stir fry vegetables ready prepared at Tesco and presumably other places.
The broccoli and beef stir fry the recipe of which is on Netmums.
Chocolate gives me constipation so if you can do without it then good.
