Hello everybody I'm kieran and I'm new to the forum. I just wanted to start by saying that it is great to know that there is a vast amount of support out there for diabetics. I would like to become more involved with the forum and e a regular on here and I was hoping that I could begin with a post of my own. Basically I'm absolutely terrified. I have been a type one diabetic for the past thirteen years. My diabetes has always been very poorly controlled and I fear I'm living in denial with it all. Things have gotten bad lately with high blood sugar levels that I often fear I'm not going too wake up the next morning and it really scares me. I'm like the worst type 1 diabetic you could ever wish to know. Its very rare I test blood sugar levels and I'm on four injections per day but usually just end up doing two by missing injections. My diet is also not the best. Its pretty mucha matter of me pretending its not thereat all. In general I was wondering as to whether anybody here has experienced this in their diabetes control and how did you overcome it ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read my post. Kind regards kieran.

Hi kierantaylor, you have had a had start to life! If you mean what you say then you are only going to get better ::)) I'm t2 but by listening and putting into practice the lchf regime I have lost weight and my bs's have dropped into " normal" levels of 5.5 average, it's not easy but the consequences of not gaining control are too horrible to think about.......you will have all the support and encouragement from posters who have been though this and have largely overcome the worst of this illness, keep posting and let us know your bmi and bs readings.

Hi there Clive thank you for your response. Yes I'm serious about getting back on track its just beenso long since if beeningood health that I'm worried whether I will be able to do it. I'm scared of the consequences if I do not if just been a lottler frightened lately. Thank you again Clive for the post

^^^^What he said, it's brilliant on this forum and you're not alone any more. Welcome to the club.

Thanks kierantaylor, I know you will receive much encouragement and sound advice here , lots to read and take on board , but like any endeavour....step by step and you will accomplish this ::)) looking forward to getting to know you , ask any q's you like , keep posting.

Hi Clive thank you for the reply its great to meet you all and I look forward to getting to know everybody too. I have just done a BG test which shows it reading at 28.8 which is high so I have just taken extra novorapid insulin to see if it drops throughout tonight.

Yeah as you say Clive step by step and things will get better I'm trying my best to begin testing more regularly at the moment and I think healthier eating wouiod be very beneficial to me also

it's easy to get frustrated when you try your best and it doesn't work, are you with a hospital diabetic unit?, they can be your best friend
a lot here would suggest you get your basal right first

it's easy to get a pass/fail mentality when you test 10 times a day and the readings are all over the place and not see the meter numbers as just a way of helping adjust your insulin
no need to be scared, you aren't the first ..they get people everyday that mess up and are having problems with BG and just diabetes in general.
there is an anon line to ring for anything big or small, or even just a chat

some more reading if you want,

Yeah I understand what you mean jack. Oh that's great thank you for the reading material I will definately take a look :-) . I think it's just because I havnt been on too I it for so long the thought of balancing everything again is a bit daunting but I think one step at a time is the best idea to go with . I need to start doing my recommended four injections per day again but because I have been doing two for so long I think I should keep the dose at a low rate for each and gradually work up and see why effects it would have. I'm just a little uncertain of how would it affect my bg levels but hey that's what my glucose meter is for.

Well my bg level has dropped from in the twenties down to 4.8 which is within range for me guys. I'm not sure wether thats too quick to drop though and if it could be dangerous for a drop that quick at all ?

Have you got the basic background insulin being used?

Your levels and needs will be different to when you last paid attention to ur D. It rarely stays the same, especially over years.

So start at basics again.

With levels in their 20's it is probably going to need more correction insulin than if you were under 12.

Ideally try to minimise your foods containing carbs until your levels drop. Have plenty of water.

Eggs have about 4g of converted carbs in them but are recommended.. As being low carb to eat, same as cheese and cream. So boiled eggs, pached, scrambled, omlette are great. Having coffees with cream fill you up more than coffee with milk. Some slices of cheese etc.

Just try to minimise carby food until your levels drop to under 12 initially.

If you're correcting from levels in the 20's you ought to try and check every hour and during the night at 2 or 3am as well.

I hope that you will keep us up todate as to your struggles as the advice here is from experienced users and pretty much here all the time... When health professionals aren't.

I hope you can get levelled down. You'll get huge support here if you want to turn your well being around. The majority of us T1's have had some time in the wilderness before coming back to looking after ourselves....

Hey there thank you for your advice. My basic insulin is due once in the morning, once at lunch once at tea time then long acting before bed to see me through the night really. Novo rapid is the quick acting insulin and I use lantus before bed as a long acting Insulin. Yeah Iv been looking into carb counting but I think I should get myself back on track before trying it I'm not too sure. Thank you for the advice Donnellysdogs it is comforting to know that others have been in the same situation as myself with type 1 it is comforting to know that I'm not the only one.

I will keep you all upto date for sure. Any developments and improvements I will be sure to update them here :-) I'm looking to get involved with the forum as much as I possibly can :)

ask your Dr but you don't want a bad hypo to put you off, 6-8 might be a good start
ask your Dr you may find a 70/30 mixed insulin twice a day suits you better for now, but when I need insulin I would do 4

Hi Kieran and welcome to the forum :)

First off you need to start taking your diabetes seriously, missing injections will only lead to high bg levels and complications in the long-term. Ask your DSN to [ut your name down for the next DAFNE course, it teaches you to carb count and match you isulin accordingly, as well as covering other aspects of type 1 diabetes management.

The following is an on-line version of the course which you should find useful:
