I know that if I add vinegar or lemon juice to a meal it lowers my blood sugars. Here are two references to this.

I did ask my G.P. about controlling the Dawn Phenomenon with Cider Vinegar tablets. as I have seen this on another forum. He is a great Dr. who takes a special interest in diabetes. He thought that this was something that should be done cautiously as there are contra-indications. Apparently it can cause potassium loss in people using insulin and long term use can create calcium loss in bones. He also listed diuretics, digoxin and laxatives as some of the medication contra- indicated. He would prefer a diabetic to consult their Dr. prior to use.

Thanks for that Catherine. It is always best to check out these things thoroughly before embarking on a course of action as you never know positively what may affect you.

Hi Sue,
Those contra-indications were not from a textbook, just what he remembered and the Dr. assured me that there were even more but he didn't have time to look them all up. Have done a search and found this which lists, cancer drugs, calcium drugs, calcium channel blockers,(used for high BP, angina,Raynaud's and abnormal heart rhythms.)
Seeing those listed and the possible side effects etc. makes me more aware that people should ask their G.P. before trying out things. Some people forget that diabetes may not be the only health problem that people are experiencing.

Since reading your post I have come across 2 vinegar books in our bookcase.

One recommends cider vinegar use regularly if you have betes, the other just recommends everyone drinks a teaspoonful or two in a glass of water daily as it's good for your system.

Wonder if that is why Lord Byron is reputed to have drunk a glass of vinegar with his meal instead of the usual wine – to his hosts’ consternation apparently.

Perhaps there is nothing new under the sun. :)

Hi, I'm newish to this diabetes thingy, only been diagnosed half a yr ago and still finding my way round it food wise  . I have come to realise through trial and error (and some reading but can't quote as I can't remember where from) that acidic stuff does help lower my sugar level after a meal.

I first discovered this effect when I had some pan fried chinese dumplings (meat+cabbage in a thin doughy outer skin) with some dark chinese vinegar and shredded ginger (a traditional way of eating them) and my after meal reading was actually lower than the before reading! so I started testing the theory out and it seems to have work every time. My gherkin eating habits are becoming a bit of a joke in the house now, or if I'm eating out, I'll try and add something acidic to the meal, be it ordering a side pickle dish of torshi, or a squeeze of lemon/lime (even works on a tiny tiny amount of Ben & Jerry's frozen yogurt), I've also been known to eat the slices of lemon that come in the ice water jug... freshly squeezed lemonade from nandos was fine too, even though it probably had sugar added to it, but I had it with a high protein meal and it didn't affect my sugar level too much after...

I did try the 2 spoonsful of cider vinegar thingy once, but it brought back an old gastric problem I've had as a youngster and I'm still trying to get rid of it now after a few months  so do be careful about drinking vinegar!
