hi everyone

on the friday two weeks ago i went down with what i thought was a cold (my second this year) but no sniffing and sneezing just the most horrendous cough. well by the thursday i tried to get a doctors appointment...hah have you tried that lately?!
well no joy and told to phone back in the morning-again no appointments but the receptionist said she would get a doctor to phone me, which he did and said he wanted to see me straight away.
turns out i have a nasty virus and he put me on a four day, high dose of antibiotics.

well i am feeling a smidge better but since i started the antibiotics my bs levels are really high, even when i am just having yogurt (lidl greek) and soup (heinz tomato) as i have no appitite for anything...how can they be 15 when i have hardly eaten anything?

as i am keeping a three month bs chart for my doctor i wrote down when i started to feel ill, when i started the antibiotics etc and the rise did correlate with me feeling worse.

what are your experiences with this and did you manage to bring your bs levels down?

Antibiotics don't do a thing to viruses (Virii?) they only kill bacteria. So you must have a secondary infection with bacteria?

Any illness can and will push up blood sugars, you just have to monitor them and deal with them as best you can.

I also have a cough at the moment, of course, mine is almost certainly flu and turning into pneumonia, as is the case with most men!

H

maybe i have had an infection as well-to be honest i was feeling so unwell i wasnt listening too closely...plus having to have to travel to a neighbouring village to see the doctor did me no favours!

well now i hope that...ahem...potential pneumonia clears up

There's a good one-pager somewhere on diabetes.co.uk about what to do differently on "sick days".

I would also suggest getting an annual flu vaccination, unless you are opposed to vaccination. The evidence for diabetics benefitting from flu shots is pretty sound.
