Hello friends!

We are visiting the Uk in a couple of weeks as my hubby has relatives near Derby and in Chesterfield! Can I expect that the long flight over will mess with my BG levels very much? We are having 2 small stops on the way. We have informed the airline of the need for diabetic meals onboard but I have heard that this may not have been a good idea....

Just wondering what are peoples thoughts on this...has been 4 years since we visited.

Thanks so much

Sandra

It's a problem for insulin users (because of the time differences), but as a diet only T2 I don't see that there should be any problem.

The trick for you will be making sure that you have enough low-carb food to eat.

I wouldn't trust any airline's definition of a "Diabetic Meal" (which are like the 70s definition of diabetic "no added sugar"). Then again you need to be pragmatic on a flight that long. Eat at a big meal at the airport and take some pack-lunches for the flight. You can always pick your way around the stuff that looks like it's carby.

Unless you are flying business, airline food is junk anyway.

Agree with Stephen - I'd phone and scrap the diabetic meal. I checked what this comprised on a number of airlines a while back. Without fail, it seemed to comprise a big pile of healthy starchy carbohydrates!
You're better off having their standard meals and leaving the carby bits. I normally pick a friendly looking member of cabin staff, smile sweetly, and ask if I could have first pick of the "choices" on the menu before before the trolley comes round in case they run out of what's best for me. They always help, and sometimes they've pilfered bits from the business menu for me!

That sounds great, thank you both for your replies!
