People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
Don't know if anybody else has signed up for daily emails from Sherry Brescia website, but today they have emailed out interesting info on vitamin d.

Don't know how to get the link on here....it is an American website, but has some quite good info sometimes...

Thanks, that's not one of the ones I get, I'll have a look

If you take Vit D, you should also supplement with Vit K, its too complicated to explain why, but Google it.

Wow, I didn't know this but it explains why I had a craving for curly kale and other leafy green veg when I was taking a vitamin D supplement. Thank you.

To mention specifically, its vitamin K2 which is present in fermented dairy products rather than in green leafy veg. It helps in the proper distribution of calcium in the body- strong bones & prevents calcification of blood vessels.

Vit k also helps with teeth too, something which diabetics need to be aware of.

I've also heard people mention that magnesium should be taken along with vit D.... but again, not entirely sure why!

I was found to be Vit D deficient from blood test done by D consultant at hospital. Got results through seeing GP surgery dsn who told me to make app with GP who did Vit D injection and told me not to mess about with vit D3 capsules. The only real symptoms of vit D deficiency that I experienced, was leg cramp at night in bed which I thought was due to the small dose Atorvastatin 10mg that I had not long started but stopping the statin didnt stop the cramp so thats why the bloodtest was done. Once the injection was given, the cramp slowly disappeared. I now have a yearly Vit D bloodtest done and get out in the sun a bit more.

If you are going to take a vit D supplement it is a good idea to have your serum calcium checked because you shouldnt take D with a high serum calcium

It is best to get tested to find out your Vitamin D status, but as we all stay indoors so much more now, it is much more likely to be Vitamin D deficient than to have high serum calcium.

When assessing Vitamin D's role in diabetes, don't forget the parathyroid hormone.
Testing for Vitamin D is not enough.

An overview of the parathyroid.
The calcium regulating gland that helps to keep bones healthy.

I am currently being treated for very low Vitamin D, and high parathyroid hormone. I had no idea about the complexities of it all until I started having stress fractures in my feet due to diabetic neuropathy. The fractures were not healing even with surgery and I was found to be deficient in Vitamin D and high in PTH (parathyroid hormone).

I had no idea about the vital role the parathyroid performs in calcium regulation and the impact low Vitamin D has on causing raised parathyroid hormone and poor calcium absorption until my recent blood test results and advice from an endocrinologist. The first step is to get the Vitamin D level correct in my body. Diabetes really does have such a massive impact on the whole of the body systems.

I just take a dose of sunshine every day. Bliss.

Of course, that's not going to be so simple when I'm back in the UK, but for now, it's one of those punches I'll happily roll with. <<<<< sun kissed cheeks.
