Vitamins / Supplements

A friend has suggested that I try Chromium Picolinate to try and help even out my (very changeable!) moods. I am already on a SSRI for agitation and anxiety for only the second time and quite happy to stay on them until I feel well enough to start tapering off.

My friend who also suffers from depression said that this seems to work quite well in those who tend to have depression linked in with their anxiety and that it stabilised mood.

I had a nose around on the net and lo and behold..it is sometimes recommended for weight loss and to help those with diabetes as apparently it helps the body's natural insulin work better. Or something like that. :?

So..has anybody heard of it, does anyone take it or has an opinion on it?

I am willing to give it a go (she who HATES meds with a vengeance 8) ) to try and get on an even keel mentally but wondered if it is advisable.

Opinions welcome, ta muchly

Hi thanks all for the support and was as indicated by others not advocating my chocies to anyone mearly saing what works for me ...~I thought that was the point of the forum to discuss points and help people make their own informed chocies ...as i alway say to my client if you dont know what all the choices are you cannot make an informed choice....and the other thing i do say to any clients i see is that we are all different and no one thing is definately going to work for everyone...
I have tried Chrmium Picolinate but now use Cinnulin PF and also that Beta Glucan is supposeed to help with better gloucose management as does using a lower carb type diet....For me at any rate.....

Interesting to look at the amount in food rather than supplements,
According to wiki rolled oats contain 4% beta glucan
20g of oats would give you 800mg .
I tablet of beta glucan contains 200mg and the dose is 3 a day ie 600mg (Boots herbal store)

Hi Ladybird
I have taken Chromium Picolinate for a number of years , I have experimented with it during my training sessions and noticed a much faster uptake of glucose after taking it during a run...I take it a couple of hours before. If my sugars are on the lower side of what I like them before setting out I will not take this along with my other supplements as it will drop me too fast.
I will take it when I get back with a meal. So yes ,I would say I have seen evidence with me that it does help with the uptake of Glucose in the blood. I don't know of it's benefits in helping with depression as it is not something that I am troubled with but it may do. I certainly know with me that it helps to lower my insulin needs. And the more stable the BS the more stable the mood :D
