Type 2 VLCHF Constipation.

what foods are you eating? are you having any veg, for example?
I've struggled all the way through since starting in Feb to be honest. It's a small price to pay to get your life back I suppose but I'm sure there must be some means of regulating and my movements.

I'm probably not eating enough greens as I usually favor salad to Kale and Spinach. I've just read that Psyllium Husk Powder is supposed to help but can't find nutritional info on any of the sites.

I've also been eating too much protein the last couple of days as Im campiing and have reduced access to some foods which hasn't helped matters.

I think I just need to stop whinging probably and do the same. Spinach and a few sprouts should do the trick hopefully.

I'm gonna look into the Psyllium Husk Powder cos I'd rather take that than do spinach every day.

Any advice would be a real help. Drinking plenty of water but need to go so bad. Really bloated and getting stomach ache due to infrequency of visits.

Take 20 ml of Milk of Magnesia it will sort you out.

Then keep up the water and start adding half a teaspoon of salt a day and you are likely to be as right as rain in a few days:)

Diagnosed 13/4/16: T2, no meds, HbA1c 53, FBG 12.6, Trigs 3.6, HDL .75, LDL 4.0, BP 169/95, BPM 85, 13st 8lbs, waist 34" (2012 - 17st 7lbs, w 42").

16/6/16: FBG AV 4.6, Trigs 1.5, HDL 2.0, LDL 3.0, BP 112/68, BPM 6O, 11st 5lbs, waist 30", PWV 7.0. Lifelong migraines and hay fever gone.

Regime: 25g LCHF, run 1 mile daily, weekly fasting, occasionally longer fasts.

For me it was a couple of Senokot tabs then when they worked (as they did that is one tab at night over two days bye the way ) I continued with one or two sachets of Fybogel a day things been pretty consistent since then.

I just had a little bit of minor constipation for a couple of weeks when I first started LCHF while i was getting used to this way of eating. Plenty of veggies - especially greens, nuts, seeds (e.g. flax), fats & oils, in addition to plenty of fluid are usually enough to keep me OK now.

The only time I may not be completely regular is if I do a bit of fasting, in which case it's a matter of not having so much waste to dispose of, so a bit longer between the times I need to go. But that's not quite the same issue, though it may be something to consider.

You've not suddenly upped your dairy have you?

Maybe a large amount of cream, full fat yoghurt, that sort of thing?

If you look up lepicol (the brand I use) on Holland and Barrett's website, the nutritional info is 0.45 calories per 5 g serving , zero protein and fat and 88% fibre. Lepicol has added acidophilus to improve gut flora, but the other brands are (I think) pure psyllium.

It should not be necessary for anyone to constantly to rely on meds unless you have a confirmed stomach problem.

Some meds can make your bowel and stomach lazy.... And cause more problems longterm....

Diet should be the first thing to be assessed..

I remember the old 'liquid paraffin' .
Once anyone gets stuck on these remedies, it becomes something for life,

As you say, listen to your body, sort the diet, address the problem, don't medicate for the symptoms.

Having a magnesium citrate (herbal tablet) may help constipation.

Ground Flaxseed Chia seeds can help.

Increasing drinks of water does not help some people... It depends upon the underlying cause of the constipation.

Red meat or even chicken can be a problem for some people.

Some persons will be advised to increase fibre but some persons will need to go low fibre.

There is not set, given cure for constipation or bloating.

Me, I have severe problems with my colon and know that only low fibre diet can help me. I know I am extreme though with my problems.

Ground flaxseed and chia seed kept my colon good for 4 years but after morphine patches it gave up on me...

I was always low carb... Lots of fibre was dreadful for me. I was recommended to have low fibre but add in the chia/flax seed.

I hope this is a one off for you. If it persists you really need to log down what foods you have and analyse how often you go etc...

Bowel changes can be symptoms of illness.. They should never go unheeded and undiscussed with a GP.
I've even had to take photos previously to show my GP and Gastro Consultant..

Please do not just medicate... They all warn not to be used for longer than 3-5 days and there is a reason for this...

Lactulose from the chemist is a useful aid. It is a non-absorbed sugar (O.K. for diabetics) which helps fermentation in the gut. This is not classed as a laxative, but as a stool softener. My proctologist claimed it could be used long term to ensure that you never had to strain!

Yes, some can be used long term but problems wih pain or constipation or changes in motions should not be used regularly without seeing a GP. Changes in bowel habits can be symptoms of an underlying illness.. (Not an illness itself) and should be discussed.

First off though should be trying to change your diet to help your body, analysing when and what helps and finding out if there is something that is causing it that can be avoided.

I spoke to my gastro chap this week about long term use of dulcolax (sugar free) and he said although it doesn't appear to have side effects, that all medicines can affect somebody adversely and real long term effects still aren't known for any drug....
