Hi there ,
Need some advice if possible , type 2 diabetic ,last hb1ac was 47 ,take metformin 500 mg twice a day.

Have list 3 kilos in the last 6 months through hard work and diet use a Fitbit and regular exceed 20k steps per day.

Every night I wake up wide awake at around 0300 regardless. I try to follow a LCHF diet and as I said before I take very regular exercise.
My question is can the metformin lower my bloodsugar too much ,if I have managed to control it via diet.
Any help appreciated

Do you test yourself when you wake up, and do you feel OK or not so good? The best thing is to test yourself, assuming you have your own meter of course.

Metformin doesn't help a great deal in reducing blood sugars, but it can reduce the amount of glucose produced by your liver, which the liver then sends out to the blood stream to give you a boost if you are lower than your body likes to be. (usually after fasting) If you are concerned, perhaps you should have a word with your GP about reducing it.

I also wake up around that time, every night, but it is because my bladder is full. :)

I only wake at that time when the dawn phenomoneum kicks in and takes any high bg higher. Thrush too at that time of morning.
Not now, now I'm on insulin.
Thank god.
You must test thou. It's important to know what's happening.

If I could sleep I'd be happy.
It does seem to be a side effect of diabetes.

I wake up around 5 / 5.30am most days nowadays after about 6hrs sleep, combination of a full bladder and cramp in the legs. If my next HbA1c is lower, I might give up Metformin for a bit to see if it's causing the cramps.

I find I have the opposite problem. Before diagnosis I frequently had calf cramps, toe cramps, and full bladder waking me up before I needed to. Now, on 4x500g Metformin, I very rarely get any problem, and sleep right through till a civilised hour. I realize I am lucky in this respect.

Leg cramps could be due to electolyte inbalance. If you are on an LC trpe of diet, then this may be reducing your sodium levels, and I was advised to increase salt in the early stages of LCHF to compensate. Also some BP meds and blood thinners can act as diuretics. Check the meds leaflets.

Yeah, I do take a diuretic BP med, I take it in the morning to prevent it waking me up like that. I've heeded the advice to up my salt. That's been a bit of a struggle, as we've not added salt to anything for years and really notice when people add it to cooking veg.

In my case I was a heavy smoker, and this gave me a potassium deficiency. I have to have bananas by the bogoff, Not good for the diabetes though, except that it is only recently that fructose has become an elephant in the room.

Edit to add: If you do go ahead reducing medication, I add the usual caveat Blah Blah Let your doctor know Blah Blah
