I have been T1 for almost 1 year now. I woke up this morning after a good night sleep feeling so exhausted. I had an easy weekend with naps I don't usually take. I fell asleep on the bus on the way to work. I got to 11.30am and came home and slept for 3 hours. I still feel very tired. Apart from my usual joint pain I feel fine. Blood sugars are slightly high.

This reminds me of when I was in DKA when diagnosed but didn't know. So lethargic. Ketones are normal.

Has anyone else experienced this? I've had my bloods done recently and all normal.

Have you been over-working recently or had a lot on your mind and events have caught up with you? If the tiredness continues then go back to your Dr's and they may do blood checks to try and find the cause of your tiredness, but in the meantime just keep checking your bg levels and if raised check for ketones, but don't let things linger on too long and seek help if matters don't improve.

i feel this way whenever my sugars run above 9 mmol/L. As soon as they hit 9 I start to yawn and feel lethargic until they get back down. I also find that if i sleep with sugars above 9 i wake up feeling awful, and usually headachy because, apparently, higher sugars can cause your neck muscles to tense up, and that can cause headaches and poor sleeps.

I would work on bring those numbers back down to normal and see if it gets better.

This is interesting as I have also been feeling absolutely exhausted for weeks on end. I have bought myself some Floravital tonic which has helped me a little. I'm hoping to go on a pump soon so fingers crossed that will help a lot once it's all set up correctly. I took my BM this morning and my sugars are 16.4 (normally around 5/6 in the morning)... I think I've been so tired last night that I've forgotten to do my usual evening basal Glargine shot! :( I normally NEVER forget to take it but with being so tired I've just gone straight to sleep! I've got the diabetic clinic at 11.20 this morning so they will be having words with me no doubt! I'm at work at the moment so I can't exactly go and take it either as the basal is always left at home! :( Can't wait to get a pump!!

So I'm not alone! I slept for 3 hours yesterday afternoon and still managed an early night. Have woke up exhausted again. BS was 8 this morning.

Hi Shazza, are you on Metformin?, as I was told it can deplete your B12 which can reduce your iron, I'm on 3monthly B12 injections , does make a difference, ask the Doc because not all Doc do blood tests for B12 and iron, be firm with them, I suffered for years with tiredness, they put it down to just being a woman, ended up having iron infusion as iron so low and nobody noticed, hope you feel better soon .

No I'm not on Metformin. I'm on Lantus and Novorapid. I have an apt next week so I will mention it. Thanks.

Hi Shazza74
I take novorapid and Lantus.
I tend to find that if my BG readings go above 9 i get lethargic and sleepy.

one thought is that after a year you may be coming to the end of honeymoon period and your insulin requirements may / will increase.
have a word with your DSN about this.

the other thing is definitely stress as somebody else has mentioned. if you are feeling stressed it can have an impact on BG's and in turn make you feel tired.

Hi @Shazza74, I appreciate that you are feeling exhausted and the following advice may not help much with this, but have you done any overnight blood testing? It is possible that you are going low overnight (it is known to happen with Lantus) and I've always found this leads to exhaustion and tiredness.

It might be worth checking your bg levels a couple of times during the night, say at 1am and 4am, to try and discount overnight BG levels from the equation.

I have gradually got more and more tired over the years. Just been told it's a diabetic and thyroid thing. Then through horrible continuous stress my sugars very brittle, I was eventually told I have fibromyalgia and ME/CFS.... I've never been sure about this diagnosis as diabetes can display the same symptoms.
What i do know is the stress continued and I now have an exaggerated stress / anxiety response with no conscious input from myself! Which makes my sugars go up
I am unable to work
And now I have done various courses with the ME clinic etc on trying to be mindful and pace myself.
Not always possible as my life is still busy.... so the stress goes up and I end up sleeping and sleeping
I have lost so much time out of my life
Earlier this year they brought attention to 'Missing Millions'..... so whether it's that or the diabetes ..... I don't know what it's like not to feel exhausted all the time

have you had tests for thyroid ??

I had the tired and feeling cold , and emotional for ages -- and finally about 6 months ago got a hypothyroid diagnosis ( YAY for 2 immune disorders  )

Hi, thanks, yes I've been under active for over 10 years. Tried t3 last year as well as it made sense and I found someone willing to let me try it. But a year later and no difference so off the t3 now and levothyroxine dose back up to 200mg
