Waking up with fatigue

For a little while, not long after waking in the morning I am hit by a wall of fatigue (bit like if I ate half a loaf of white bread!). It affects all of my body including my mind and I can get so irritable, can't think straight etc. This morning was very bad and I thought I may not survive. I know it sounds melodramatic, but that is how I felt. After a couple of hours the fatigue started to lift - about 1 hr after breakfast. Am I waking up with a hypo? I take my Metformin before I go to bed at about 12am and wake usually about 8.30am to 9am. My BS when I wake is usually between 5 and 6 - ish, though it has been in the 4s. At the moment, through the day I'm trying to eat something small about every 3 hrs because if I try to go from breakfast through to teatime the fatigue hits again and sometimes I haven't felt well enough to make a meal. It's like walking in a semi coma! Would having something small to eat ready for when I first wake help? My husband is staying over at the moment to see to my 2 dogs in the morning.

Hi Belshie
I may be wrong. Ut I have always been told to take metformin with food and some OP on here have even suggested having them in the middle,of a meal so that they are infested as part of the meal.

You may want to ask your GP to check your thyroid if the fatigue continues. Any tight feeling at your neck? Hair-loss? difficult to get going? Joint pain? If so, do check your thyroid.

Non of those Totto and have been checked out for thyroid problems.

Glad to hear it, hypothyroidism is a terrible thing and very difficult to diagnose in many cases. And the care is lousy.

Sorry I cant do anything to help.

Other causes of fatigue are
  1. High blood sugar levels
  2. Anaemia
  3. Vitamin D deficiency
  4. Vitamin B12 deficiency
Try and get tested for numbers 2 - 4. Docs aren't that keen on testing for Vitamin D deficiency, but it can make you feel terrible (took me over 2 years to get diagnosed with it).

Have you been tested for a sleep disorder? I was diagnosed with Sleep Aponea some 5 years ago and my world is very similar to yours. When my BGs are high for susatined periods, i.e 15+ I become even more spaced out than usual. A usual day is about 2-4 hours asleep, and when awake I'm grumpy, irritable, can't concentrate, short-tempered, impatient and then I go back to bed at night.

Apart from that I am a really nice bloke.

I sleep like a log, Jung. No wonder you are grumpy etc. with such little sleep. I don't know if there is a connection between your high BG and sleep apnoea as I don't have that experience. But I hope things improve for you.

As someone has already suggested.. anaemia is a real culprit and have been suffering with fatigue for ages!
I have just been diagnosed with that and after just a week on iron tablets I am amazed at how much better I feel.

Amaemiavus nasty - I had my B12 checked -it was fine, as long term metformin can affect the body's ability to absorb. Vit B12 is vital for wellbeing.
