One of our cats has been poisoned, and sadly has died. The vet thinks that he drank some anti-freeze - it's a risk at this time of year because obviously everyone is topping up their car radiators, and I guess someone either spilled some, or left an open container lying about. This is really just to warn you all to keep an eye open.....

The only consolation is that he didn't suffer much, but we will miss him.

Sorry to hear this Jay, bless him,
Trouble is antifreeze has an inviting smell for animals then it irritates their skin so they lick the affected spot, they should change the smell,
The other horror is slug pellets, they smell nice to dogs, I think they had to change the smell on them from aniseed.

So sorry to hear this .. FB warnings have been sharing this information via RSPCA ..
Also they are asking people to leave bowls of water in their garages sheds etc , so many getting lost , or just keeping warm ..

But your cat is really sad news .. Thinking of your loss

So sorry to hear about your beloved pet :( but thank you for the warning.

Thanks everyone. I tend to be philosophical about pets - they don't all live to a ripe old age and this kind of thing is the price we pay for giving our cats freedom of the neighbourhood, which is an excellent hunting ground, and allowing them to behave as naturally as possible (although they have bells to prevent them catching songbirds). However, he was a cheerful soul - albeit a bit bonkers - and we'll miss that.

I guess we will think about a replacement, maybe in the Spring, but not just yet :(

Just one further thing. We have another cat and the two of them have never really got on. Archie - the one who has died - arrived a couple of years after Fergus and with hindsight we didn't handle settling him in very well, with the result that Fergus has always been quite aggressive (just growling and hissing, not tearing lumps out of each other). However, Fergus is definitely a bit confused and put out by Archie's absence and is staying close to home. Particularly when the radiators are on :)

Cats are strange, they can be the worst of enemies' with another resident cat but if that one goes missing I'm sure they grieve for the lost one.

My cat has started to drink out of the toilet, dont know why as he always has fresh water in his bowl.
I now dont put bleach in or other detergent,I have started to clean it with a used lemon,we should keep the door closed but dont always remember.

You could also try to remember to put the lid down too.
