Was prediabetic (6.3), but now I'm at 4.9! Why?

Hello,

I'm new here. Thank you for having me.

I was wondering if anyone knew why my A1c is so low now? I was prediabetic the past 5-8 or so years with the highest reading at 6.3. Normally, it was 5.9 or 5.8, so I decided to change that. I had gestational diabetes while pregnant and my mother has diabetes type 2 but takes medications. I don't want to do that; I prefer to modify my diet and fix it. So I went on a keto diet for a few months but it was really hard. But my A1c went down. I am pretty good about guessing what my A1c will be, based on what I've been eating the past few months. So it surprised me when it went down to 5.3, then 5.1, 4.9, and then all the down to 4.0!! Kind of thinking the 4.0 is getting too low, so I ate more carbs. It's 4.9 now.

I have been taking Super Primrose 1300mg of Evening Primrose Oil, as suggested on the keto group I belonged to. It's not keto, but rather Optimal Keto, with an emphasis on higher proteins (vs. fat), so I prefer this one more. It says it helps control insulin, so this must've been a factor, besides watching my carb count per meal.

Any thoughts?

Also, I am not heavy and have never been heavy. If anything, I would consider myself skinny fat (because I used to LOVE sugar). I have always exercised my entire life. I think when I got injured and stopped working out, was when my body reacted.

No smoking/drinking, 50 years old, 125 pounds, 5feet 6 inches.

Eating a low carb diet has negated my diabetes fairly well - I expect that it has done the same for you.
I was puzzled to get a Hba1c of 42 last time, but I have had an abscess under a tooth which was apparently of long standing, several months, so that might have been raising my BG levels. I had expected, from my post meal BG levels to be lower - maybe next time. You should be able to fine tune your Hba1c by adjusting your intake of carbs per day.

Thank you for your response! I was fine tuning my carbs. The thing is, I was having a hard time with getting my blood sugar level under 100. I was trying to get my sugar readings under 120 after my meals. I could only have one serving to get that number, so that's what I was doing, which was really hard. But now, I pretty much eat anything, and I'm okay. Just wondering why it was so extreme and now it's like I'm back to normal. I'm just wondering if there's something to be said regarding our beta cells, and allowing them to rest and heal, so now it was able to reverse some of the damage or overload? Or is it because of the primrose. Just wondering if anyone else has had something similar happen. I know I'm predisposed to getting, but my numbers are so low now. Not complaining, just wondering why/how?

I am sure that there can be recovery of insulin sensitivity - type twos usually have more than enough insulin but it is ineffective. After a year of low carbing I knew I'd cracked diabetes when I had a reading of 5.6 (100) after Christmas dinner two days in a row.....
