Was this a hypo?

Hi there. Just joined. Can anyone help? Was diagnosed a year ago. Recently started lowest dose of Metformin. Last week went for a swim. This was my only exercise other than walking for a long time. Since being diagnosed my muscles have wasted. The exercise made my arm and leg muscles ache. The following night I woke up feeling nauseous and chilled. I started to shiver violently and uncontrollably in waves affecting my whole body. This went on for what seemed like about half an hour. Scared me half to death. I've read that low bg following exercise can have effects lasting up to 48 hours. Could this have been a hypo? Didn't think to check my bg. Am only on Metformin, no insulin. This week I checked my bg before swimming. It was 5.3, so ate a small apple and a small handful of almonds. After the swim it was 4.8 so I drank half a small carton of juice which put it up to 7.6 about half an hour later. Then I ate fish and chips and 2 hours later my bg was 6.5. No nighttime shakes this week, so presumable did the right things? Any insights much appreciated.

Probably not!
It might have been a "false hypo" if you are used to running on high levels
Metformin alone doesn't usually cause hypo. In any case a lowish blood glucose such as 4 is only dangerous if you've used a medication, which keeps the level falling. 5.3 is a NORMAL blood glucose level.
I go to the gym several times a week and usually start early in the morning with a fasting BG of around 5. I've never needed to load up on carbs after the exercise.
Remember it's medicine that causes hypo, not the condition itself. Diabetes causes HIGH blood sugar.
A constant level over 7 is thought to cause damage to the vascular system.

Many thanks for the two replies. Have been to see the doc and he said much the same as you Hana. Thinks the shivering was prob an immune response to something, suggesting that my immune system is working well (in spite of rheumatoid arthritis treated with Methotrexate). Was really frightening though. He's happy with my latest HbA1C of 6.3.
